Hodges' Model: Welcome to the QUAD: methodologies

Hodges' model is a conceptual framework to support reflection and critical thinking. Situated, the model can help integrate all disciplines (academic and professional). Amid news items, are posts that illustrate the scope and application of the model. A bibliography and A4 template are provided in the sidebar. Welcome to the QUAD ...

The doi links above lead to a page where to read the 'View Full Text HTML', or 'PDF' you need a login. This suggests a paywall(?), but the paper can be found here:

https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1842543&rec=1&srcabs=886584&alg=7&pos=3

These are not the original reference or title:

Jones, P. (2009) Socio-Technical Structures, the Scope of Informatics and Hodges’ model, IN, Staudinger, R., Ostermann, H., Bettina Staudinger, B. (Eds.), Handbook of Research in Nursing Informatics and Socio-Technical Structures, Idea Group Publishing, Inc. Chap. 11, pp. 160-174.

I am unable to check fully, but it appears in 2011, the paper was republished in another collection. It is nice to have a 'bovine' experience, with a lesson about copyright, open access, and predatory publishing. Alteration of titles is bound to result in repetition, confounding the accuracy of publication metrics and indices?

I am not going to add the second reference to the blog's bibliography.

Narketpally syndrome: A different approach to medical education and research

From: Marc Jamoulle
MD (UCL 1974), PhD (ULg 2017)
Family physician, Belgium (INAMI 15324119004)

hi friends,

in an unknown syndrome, another way to deal with the patient, to learn from the patient, to develop a partnership with the patient, caring while waiting for the cure,

Jamoulle, M., & Soylu, S. (2025). Phenotyping Long COVID in Children in Primary Care: A Case-Based Study Using the Human Phenotype Ontology. ORBi-University of Liège. https://orbi.uliege.be/handle/2268/334447

From: Rakesh Biswas
rakesh7biswas AT gmail.com

This paper illustrates a global patient-centered learning ecosystem, anchored in Narketpally, that adopts a syndromic approach to medical education and research. Rooted in the etymological origins of 'syndrome' ("together we flow"), this approach reframes medical research as a collective, contextual response to individual patient needs.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40674544/

Methods: The structure of the paper is intentionally modeled as a team-based learning exercise, grounded in our prior Web 2.0-based cognitive tools: CBBLE (Case-Based Blended Learning Ecosystem) https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6163835/ and PaJR (Patient Journey Record) https://pajr.in/. These are framed against the conceptual scaffolding provided by three key publications: a framework by Sturmberg et al. and two contrasting commentaries by Greenhalgh and Ioannidis.

Results: Through our ongoing CBBLE-PaJR workflow, thematic learning outcomes emerged in response to these frameworks. Sturmberg's stratified realism helped us recognize how individual patient connections, recorded in our daily practice and online learning portfolios, can drive both contextual learning and meaningful changes in patient outcomes. Greenhalgh's commentary inspired our conceptualization of a 'wildebeest river crossing value model,' contrasting population-based efficiency with individual-centered compassion. Ioannidis's critique of methodological rigor highlighted the potential for expanding low-resource, high-impact research through patient-centered designs, particularly in phases 1 and 4 of the clinical trial hierarchy.

Are you planning a health* study in 2025?

New Year - new project perhaps?

*nursing, mental health, theory, practice, management, workforce, medicine, allied health professions, social work, psychology, labs, diagnosis, palliative, end of life, diseases, public health, public MENTAL health, -isms, prevention, protection, education, learning disability, parity in care, informatics, information, literacIES, AI, arts, policy, leadership, migration, history, future, women, children, men, LGBTQ+, ethics, rights, health economics, social care, systems, services, climate change, refugees, conflict, law, leadership, resources, commerce, fraud, self-care, UN, WHO, UNESCO, regional, national, global, or planetary ..., ...

Is there a 'space' for Hodges' model in your study?

IF NOT, IMHO YOUR STUDY MAY BE INCOMPLETE!

Is this statement ...?

INDIVIDUAL
|
   INTERPERSONAL : SCIENCES
humanistic ------------------------------- mechanistic
 SOCIOLOGY : POLITICAL
|
GROUP

utter nonsense and arrogance

a psychological threat^

it's either a great joke, or a grand delusion

look - get real, we can't cover all the bases

calling attention to the high-degree of subjectivism in academia and health research

no, actually it is blatant evidence of bias and a lack of objectivity! Who is Hodges?

shamefully egotistical

our project does not need to consider:
reflection - reflective practice
critical thinking
holistic - integrated care: parity of esteem
person-centredness
the curricula (however 'expressed')

methods - methodology - philosophy

a sign we've found the true 'meta-' tool
(Yes, this is interesting!)

to the Nth degree!

a physical threat^

a fact - when critiqued using Hodges' model

limited apprehension of 'HEALTH'..

sheer ignorance

proof of an incomplete (grey) literature search

proof that 'not invented here' prevails

identification of relations and relationships is catered for, as are ...

safety, situational awareness, scoping, mapping, evaluation, analysis, synthesis, diagrams - graphical approaches, project mangement

potentially supporting inter- multi- transdisciplinarity

a sign that ('fashion') science, evidence have moved on: get over it!

a soul in search of a community of practice?

demonstrating much effort is falling on deaf ears?

time to listen, with all that's going in the world

Hodges, did you say? Sorry not here!

not commissioned/funded by a 'us'.

what? No Doctorate? Go away: please!

who does that person think they are!

   fao project/research management group/committee?

^No threat is implied, on the contrary frustration ... If Hodges' model may be of use, please do get in touch. Thanks to all for your visits and best wishes with your respective projects, studies and careers.

HC@AIxIA: AI&Health Seminar Series (2024) - 16 September

Generative AI in sequencing: enhancing models by synthetic omics data

16 September 2024 - 04:30PM CET

Speaker
: Giuseppe Jurman, Head of DSH (Data Science for Health) Unit, Fondazione Bruno Kessler – FBK (Trento, Italy)

Title
: Generative AI in sequencing: enhancing models by synthetic omics data.

  • Abstract: Synthetic data have recently gained momentum in several scientific areas as an effective solution to dealt with several aspects of data poverty and missingness. In translational medicine, biomedical images and EHR data have been the first to benefit from synthetic augmentation techniques through generative AI algorithms such as GANs or, more recently, Diffusion-like models. Extension of these methods to omics data poses further challenges due to the nature of the signal, such as the need of taking into account sample variability and multilevel omics coherence. In this talk, we will present an overview of the state-of-the-art of the synthetic data in the omics universe, including the generative methodologies, the future perspectives, and the related caveats, concluding with some applicative use cases. (joint work with Marco Chierici and Silvia Menchetti)
  • Short Bio: Giuseppe Jurman is a mathematician, with a PhD in Algebra, currently Head of the Data Science for Health (DSH) Unit at FBK. His main interest is the development and the application of artificial intelligence, machine learning and complex network models for diagnosis, prognosis and prediction in medicine, life science and computational biology, starting from EHRs, omics data and biomedical images, including digital pathology, with a particular emphasis on reproducibility and explainability. He is also interested in scientific programming with Python and other computing languages, and he teaches Data Visualization at the M.Sc. in Data Science at the University of Trento.
