c/o Jayne Wilton: Reflex-ive :: Reflection - Breathe : DO - REPEAT - WHILE

'Many of us will have experienced playing with the interaction of our breath on shiny surfaces such as windows and mirrors, allowing us temporary fields of condensation in which to doodle thoughts or messages. In emergency situations a mirror or shiny surface is held in front of the mouth of a subject to confirm whether or not they are breathing. The Breathe series makes use of these dynamics.

The breath of a series of  individuals was captured on a shiny copper surface and then etched to create a negative of the breath where it sat on the copper plate. The result is a series of evocative landscapes. This work employs and yet subverts traditional printing processes. The inscription of spent breath onto precious metal immortalises a discharge and presents an alternative to portraiture.'

Clean Air (Human Rights) Bill passes 3rd reading in House of Lords

Dear Peter

Clean Air (Human Rights) Bill passes 3rd reading in House of Lords!

Green Baroness Jenny Jones' Clean Air (Human Rights) Bill passed its 3rd reading in the House of Lords on Friday 2 December with strong cross-party support! This landmark Bill is also known as Ella's Law in memory of nine-year-old Ella Roberta Adoo Kissi-Debrah, the first person to have air pollution listed by a coroner as a cause of death.

This Green Party achievement could not have come at a more fitting time, as this week (5-9 December) marks the 70th anniversary of the Great Smog of London, which killed up to 12,000 people and led to the first Clean Air Act in 1956. But air pollution still kills around 40,000 people a year in the UK and causes severe ill health for millions more.

Great Smog Week is a great opportunity to highlight the need to bring air quality in our towns and cities to within World Health Organization limits – exactly what Ella's Law is designed to do. Here's how you can help:

💚 Sign the petition here

💚 Share our posts on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram about the Great Smog and Ella's Law
💚 Email your MP to say that you want action to reduce air pollution and ask them to support the Clean Air (Human Rights) Bill when it reaches the House of Commons. There's information on the Bill and why it's so badly needed here

As always, thank you for your support,

In solidarity,

Green Team

People Fixing the World: c/o BBC World Service

The breath of life

"A clever invention is saving the lives of hundreds of children.

Pneumonia kills about 1.4 million children under five every year. Treatment with concentrated oxygen could save many of them, but the machines that make it need a reliable source of electricity. Some hospitals have frequent power cuts, though, which can be fatal.

So scientists in Australia and Uganda came up with an innovative way to produce oxygen by separating it from the rest of the air, using a vacuum created by running water.

Then they designed special bags that can store and deliver oxygen – even when the electricity cuts out. Their systems have provided oxygen for hundreds of sick children in Uganda.

People Fixing the World hears the story of these remarkable inventions."
