Event January 2022: How VR and other technologies will impact the future of NHS service delivery

Hi all,

Hope you’re keeping well.

I’m working with the South-West AHSN to put on a Future of Care distinguished address in January featuring Health Futurist Dr. Shafi Ahmed talking about how VR and other technologies will impact the future of NHS service delivery; it should get Universities thinking about how our teaching and learning needs to develop.  I’m hoping it will be a really inspiring event for colleagues as well as our students at the University.

It will be an online as well as on campus event, although given the way Omicron is going could well be just online.

The event is planned for Thursday January 20th 2022, 7-8pm.

I wondered if it would be possible to promote this within your organisations for colleagues to sign up to if interested.

The flyer is available online here > https://pub.lucidpress.com/future-of-care-event/

Best wishes

Rob

COVID: Logic is the patient - again...

Hodges' model is evidence seeking, what logic might apply?

Logic was once the 'patient':
“Yet, by 1530, formal logic was a dying branch of studies, and by the seventeenth century it had been completely forgotten. Why? No one to my knowledge has provided a satisfactory answer. Prantl, one of the earliest scholars to take notice of medieval logic, merely relied on the prejudice of four hundred years in depicting the universities as nursing; the sick but obstinate patient (dialectics), until 'the healthy spirit of antiquity conquered the scholastic pedantry'. Bochenski is not concerned with the mechanics of historical change. Ong gives the cause of death as an inherent weakness in medieval logic itself: 'Scholastic logic was dying of the frustration attendant upon its failure to develop a symbolic system adequate to its ambition and the promise of its initial development.' Even if medieval logic could not overcome this weakness, it had nevertheless hobbled along for three hundred fifty years with the malady! Even if the universities artificially prolonged its life, how exactly did the 'healthy spirit of antiquity' do away with the old warrior?” (Heath, 1971, p.47).

"In 2012, the NHS is threatened, its future uncertain. ... Hepworth was a Labour voter - of course she was. In these drawings, she reveals her egalitarian values. Work is goodness: she sees her own work as a sculptor reflected in the steady eye and hand of the surgeon. In one drawing he even seems to wield a hammer and chisel. But this is not mere artistic self-consciousness. The work being done in these pictures saves lives; Hepworth believes her art, too, can heal souls." p.18.

Hammers and chisels are found in operating theatres and wielded by female surgeons too. The exhibition long finished, I can't believe* that I have held onto to this page from The Guardian for almost six years. I must visit Wakefield.
