Climate and the Feeling of [Momentarily] Drier Feet: Australia-Tuvalu Falepili Union Treaty

As is oft the case, I recovered a newspaper cutting (or ripping) that made my feet feel drier, for several moments at any rate ...

Reading this really gave me a lift, given the ongoing state of world events then and now:

Australia-Tuvalu Falepili Union treaty

The Australia-Tuvalu Falepili Union treaty was signed on 9 November 2023 and entered into force on 28 August 2024.

As part of the Falepili Union treaty, Australia has:

  • recognised for the first time in a legally binding treaty, Tuvalu's continuing statehood and sovereignty, notwithstanding the impact of climate-change related sea-level rise
  • committed to assist Tuvalu in response to a major natural disaster, health pandemic or military aggression
  • created a special visa pathway to support mobility with dignity, which will enable citizens of Tuvalu to come to Australia to live, work and study.

There are also obligations under the Treaty to ensure Australian interests are protected and to facilitate the smooth operation of the migration pathway and increased security cooperation:

  • Tuvalu is obliged to ensure its immigration, passport, citizenship and border controls are robust and meet international standards for integrity and security
  • Tuvalu will mutually agree with Australia any partnership, arrangement or engagement with any other State or entity on security and defence-related matters in Tuvalu.

'Lagoonscapes' made me think of the periplus, used by ancient explorers - sailors to 'map' coastlines and their features.

I also realised that people living with:
  • more advanced stage dementias
  • reduced mobility / balance
  • partial sightedness
  • stroke
- may negotiate their immediate surroundings (living room ...) using 'furniture walking'.

The first explorers did likewise by analogy?

Is a lagoon - a resting place/space - an offering of respite (care)?

In 2018 the Oceania exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts

https://www.royalacademy.org.uk/exhibition/oceania

- highlighted knowledge of the peoples who could read the currents, winds - perhaps in as differentiated manner similar to the Inuit and their environment and cultural beliefs?

Tower blocks: Challenge young and older - Courtesy the Artist © Stephen Willats (Revisited)

LIVING WITH PRACTICAL REALITIES, 1978

"Stephen Willats aimed to explore the realities of living in a British tower block. The work centres on Mrs Moran, an elderly woman who lived at Skeffington Court in Hayes, West London. Willats photographed and interviewed Mrs Moran over the course of six months. The text in the work is based on these interviews. In his composition, Willats highlights the physical, social and economic constraints that she faced. Each panel also features a question. These invite the viewer to participate directly in Mrs Moran’s lived experiences."

Gallery label, September 2023

Tower blocks are an integral, defining structure in urban and city life. Governance, effective policy, accountability, high standards, public safety and duty of care must not be an after-thought.

163 Days - Hannah Hodgson
Poetry in [not in] motion

“Hannah Hodgson takes us to the paradoxical heart of poetry itself: to be held inside a pain both intensified and soothed by the sheer brilliant presence of the poet’s mind.” – Caroline Bird

Hannah Hodgon is an award-winning poet and a palliative care patient. In her compelling debut collection 163 Days, she uses a panoply of medical, legal, and personal vocabularies to explore what illness, death and dying does to a person as both patient and witness.

163 Days is the length of Hannah’s longest period of hospitalisation to date. In this long poem, she probes various truths, personal and medical; truths which clash like a tray of dropped instruments in a silent operating theatre.

The speaker is a teenager on the cusp of adulthood. Doctors struggle to diagnose her complex conditions. Through daily, diary-like poems we see the children’s ward through Hannah’s eyes. It is decked out in primary colours. Volunteer clowns visit. At seventeen she is ‘too old’ to be here, ‘too young’ to move to the adult ward.

The mundanity of hospital life is marbled by a changing landscape of mood, hope and loss. Her symptoms are painful. She has numerous tests and procedures to keep her alive long enough to figure out what’s wrong. A gap yawns between the person she is, and the person in her medical notes.

In ‘Aftercare’, Hannah navigates the worlds of both nightclubs and hospice care as she embarks on a new version of her life as a disabled adult. 163 Days is an important collection, in which Hodgson’s true voice takes poetry into difficult places.

Bioinspired kirigami metasurfaces as assistive shoe grips

Abstract

Falls and subsequent complications are major contributors to morbidity and mortality, especially in older adults. Here, by taking inspiration from claws and scales found in nature, we show that buckling kirigami structures applied to footwear outsoles generate higher friction forces in the forefoot and transversally to the direction of movement. We identified optimal kirigami designs capable of modulating friction for a range of surfaces, including ice, by evaluating the performance of the dynamic kirigami outsoles through numerical simulations and in vitro friction testing, as well as via human-gait force-plate measurements. We anticipate that lightweight kirigami metasurfaces applied to footwear outsoles could help mitigate the risk of slips and falls in a range of environments.

Under the SSKIN

Since W2tQ started almost 15 years ago a collection of 250 draft posts have gathered (virtual dust). Many are probably empty - half-baked ideas - with no clear title (reminder - of the contents).

In nursing there are (thankfully) constant reminders, one being: the need to strike a balance between the person, being least restrictive, assumed mental capacity, best interests and high quality care delivery.

Revisiting the threshold concepts, h2cm and deprivation of liberty safeguarding draft paper brings recollection of a draft post and the lesson:

In many nursing situations you cannot assess what you cannot see.

In Nursing Times 29.11.11 a Nursing Practice comment item was titled:

“Compulsory training would help every HCA spot moisture lesions”

Denise Elson, points to the SKIN (Surface, Keep moving, Incontinence and Nutrition) bundle as a set of very useful principles, and further refined to SSKIN:

https://www.plymouthhospitals.nhs.uk/tv-sskin
SSKIN - Surface: Skin inspection: Keep moving: Incontinence: Nutrition

The Tissue Viability use the principle of SSKIN:
  • Surface: make sure you're on a supportive surface
  • Skin inspection: check it isn't discoloured or sore
  • Keep moving: change your position often
  • Incontinence: keep clean and dry
  • Nutrition: eat healthily and drink frequently ( https://www.plymouthhospitals.nhs.uk/tv-sskin )

As a reflective exercise, if needed, think about SSKIN within h2cm - Hodges' model. Not just the physical (SCIENCES) focus but how these relate to the INTRA-INTERPERSONAL, SOCIAL, POLITICAL and the SPIRITUAL. We will revisit this using h2cm.

On the blog's 15th anniversary 20th April, I'll also try and put some numbers together.

"In 2012, the NHS is threatened, its future uncertain. ... Hepworth was a Labour voter - of course she was. In these drawings, she reveals her egalitarian values. Work is goodness: she sees her own work as a sculptor reflected in the steady eye and hand of the surgeon. In one drawing he even seems to wield a hammer and chisel. But this is not mere artistic self-consciousness. The work being done in these pictures saves lives; Hepworth believes her art, too, can heal souls." p.18.

For people who are agitated and living with dementia their carers may learn to remove such cues as hat, coat and shoes.

Seeing these may cause increased agitation as a need to be elsewhere.

For #EndPJparalysis perhaps we can reverse this and use the sight clothes and footwear as a cue for 'get up & try to go'.

Borders & Boundaries 2018: Debating the limits and possibilities of Education

The Department of Educational Research invite international speakers every summer, and this year we are opening the event up to invite critical interdisciplinary scholars to engage in a range of events which bring together our three research centres: Higher Education Research and Evaluation; Technology Enhanced Learning; and Social Justice and Wellbeing in Education.

This year’s theme is Borders and Boundaries, which will be unpacked by our internationally renowned speakers and a programme of conference presentations on 3rd and 4th of July in the historic city of Lancaster.

Borders and Boundaries: Debating the limits and possibilities of Education

Borders and boundaries is an important theme in educational research and practice, having multiple meanings and interpretations. At one level, this notion reflects critical conceptualisations of place, territories and educational (im)mobilities which have come to the surface in recent years as a response to political and policy changes that seek to limit the movement of people and ideas. Alternatively, borders and boundaries may be taken to refer to theoretical demarcations and interactions, and the increasing emphasis on interdisciplinarity within research, and the associated instability of categories such as academic, practitioner, researcher and educator in the context of efficiency and structural changes within schools, universities and other institutions. This theme also has analytical value for framing debates about the perceived fluidity of formal and informal educational space in the digital age, simultaneously democratising knowledge and blurring the boundaries between professional and personal identities for many educators and academics. Finally, we envisage the theme of borders and boundaries as providing a way into discussions about social distinctions and emotional separations, which shape educational experiences, transitions, and outcomes in a broad range of ways.
