'Moved to Care' amid the Boxes - RCN

A Balikbayan Box for Nursing: artists and writers in residence

'Our new Arts Council National Lottery funded project takes the Filipino custom of the Balikbayan Box as its central theme, inspired by Romalyn Ante's poem Notes Inside a Balikbayan Box. The Balikbayan Box is a long-standing Filipino cultural practice through which we are exploring the spirit of nursing across borders and boundaries.

Visit our exhibition to explore the installation ‘Inside Home’ by Haleema Aziz and meet our writers in residence – Romalyn Ante, Jennifer Wong and Christie Watson – to explore the art of nursing with a difference.

Our writers will each be running a writing workshop for a different audience to help them engage with the exhibition themes, and develop their own writing skills: refugees, schoolchildren and young adults.

Writing residencies run in the RCN Library and Museum (20 Cavendish Square) from April – June 2026. Find our what our writers have been working on at this public celebration of art and migration panel event in July.

Our writers will be based in the Moved to Care exhibition space in the England Library from 11am-4pm during their residency week. Anybody can drop in and chat to them between 3-4pm, or if you're a member you can book a free half-hour 121 slot. Discuss your own writing, ask questions about publication or the role of art and creativity in nursing with our writers in residence.'

Frayn's - shared 'Home Address'

Frequently I've made the point that 'person-centred' means placing the individual, patient, carer ... whatever the context, at the centre of Hodges' model. At the same time this is of course an idealisation:

individual
|
INTERPERSONAL : SCIENCES
humanistic ------------------------------- mechanistic
SOCIOLOGY : POLITICAL
|
group

What is your
'home' address?

'Science, it turns out, is in this respect simply an extension of all the other means we have found of representing the world. As with pictures and narratives, the world is unimaginable without the focus of a viewpoint. To understand the world in any way whatsoever scientifically, historically, artistically, anecdotally, imaginatively we find ourselves compelled to assume a potential point of convergence from which everything is  viewed, measured, and recounted. About the entity that defines this point we know only that it is by definition invisible to us. And since the instruments of science, of logic and mathematics, and of art, are all products of this invisible entity, they will not serve to represent or explain it to us. Anything in the world, or out of it, can be perceived or thought about, or both, and represented in our various codes. The only thing that systematically eludes us, whichever way we turn, is the something upon which everything else depends. The conscious subject that gives meaning to the objective universe cannot give meaning to itself. Without it nothing can be understood; about it nothing can be said.
'The point of convergence . . .' And already we've gone wrong. The self isn't a point, in any remotely geometrical sense, but a complex organisation; and the consciousness that it generates, and by which it is animated, is a complex phenomenon.' pp.401-402. (my emphasis)

British Computer Society: Real AI 2024 -::- AI for One Health and Planetary Health

In July I posted news of this month's Real AI event 27th September. Plans are in place to attend.

In November, London beckons again:

Friday November 8th 2024

Even as I look forward to September's trip; I'm pinching myself.

Following a BCS event last year, Hodges' model has been recognised. A video chat and many email exchanges has revealed there is a model possessed with the necessary holistic bandwidth. Hodges' model has the conceptual scope to encompass intelligence(s), One Health and planetary health.

This also fits with current reading - interrupted by Hardy's A Mathematician's Apology (£2.00) - with posts to follow that will also inform November's co-presentation.

More to follow and clearly I have learned a great deal from engaging with the BCS. While my affiliate  membership has lapsed now, since the early 1990s the Society's publications, specialist groups: medical informatics, nursing, methods, security, expert systems, and now AI have proved well worth getting involved!

I am also hoping for some part-time tutoring at Bolton University in the new academic year.

A Workforce Strategy for Adult Social Care in England

"For the first time ever, the adult social care sector has come together, led by Skills for Care, to develop the Workforce Strategy it needs. Adult social care needs a workforce strategy to ensure we have enough of the right people with the right skills to provide the best possible care and support for the people who draw on it.
Development of this vital Strategy has been truly collaborative and it could not have been developed without the expertise, time and commitment of many stakeholders."

'Earthrise' c/o Bill Anders RIP

Earthrise in 4K

"In December of 1968, the crew of Apollo 8 became the first people to leave our home planet and travel to another body in space. But as crew members Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders all later recalled, the most important thing they discovered was Earth."

political malaise?

"'Solastalgia' was first coined by the philosopher Glenn Albrecht almost two decades ago; it is a blend of the Latin word "solacium" (comfort) and the Greek root "-algia" (pain or grief). Solastalgia, argued Albrecht, was a way to convey the idea of distress caused by irreversible environmental transformation. It is 'the homesickness we feel while still at home', he writes."

Where exactly do politicians and capitalists 'live'?

As I spoke of considering the environment and the carceral context across the domains of the model, I recalled another piece of paper.

The image above is from FTWeekend in 2019.

In prison of course, while the physical environment is the intended constraint, the model also invites consideration of the psychological, social, political environments and added here - the spiritual.

Social Care: in the round and square c/o King's Fund

Simon Bottery's Long Read -

What’s your problem, social care? The eight key areas for reform

- and listed below, have been mapped to Hodges' model. The full article and comments are well worth reading and may help readers discern the relationships between the key areas identified.
  1. Means testing: it’s not like the NHS
  2. Catastrophic costs: selling homes to pay for care
  3. Unmet need: people going without the care and support they need
  4. Quality of care: 15-minute care visits and neglect
  5. Workforce pay and conditions: underpaid, overworked staff
  6. Market fragility: care home companies going out of business
  7. Disjointed care: delayed transfers of care and lack of integration with health
  8. The postcode lottery: unwarranted variation in access and performance

I have associated each with the respective knowledge (care) domain in which they are placed:

1. Parity of Esteem in Means Testing
2. (Catastrophic) Cost to me, anxiety, depression, stress
3. Unmet need (mental health, counselling ...)
4. Quality of Care (Mental Health, Well-Being..)
5. Workforce (values, person-centred, self-esteem, job-well-done, BE the Difference?)
6. Market fragility (attractiveness as career pathway, having a leader)
7. Disjointed care (number of carers, lived experience...)
8. Postcode (I thought this had been addressed?)
(postcode? - a remote 'thing' outside through the window and (summer) garden]

1. Parity of Esteem in Means Testing
2. (Catastrophic) Cost to NHS - innovation, change, prevention, transformation
3. Unmet need (physical, access ...)
4. Quality of Care (Time, Logistics)
5. Workforce (tasks, scheduling, physically reasonable?)
6. Market fragility (scale, bed occupancy, local demographics...)
7. Disjointed care (geography, transfers, A&E admissions...)
8. Postcode ('literally') North, West, East, South,
Regions, London, Urban, Rural ...

1. What is your

2. (Catastrophic) Cost to my family.
3. Unmet need (socialising, access, carer ..)
4. Quality of Care (Relationships, Belonging, Communication, Family Groups..)
5. Workforce (job satisfaction, status, social worth ..)
6. Market fragility (Public perception, marketing, negativity bias - local news, time for outreach, intergenerational engagement...)
7. Disjointed care (input of family, local provisions, self-funding - budgets...)
8. Postcode (pre-social care, pre-lottery?)

 2. (Catastrophic) Cost to the State?
3. Unmet need (my choices, informal carer ...)
 4. Quality of Care (Value for £, Measures, Inspection, safety..)
5. Workforce (pay and conditions, minimum wage?, Unions, contracts, training, BREXIT ..)
6. Market fragility (FUNDING settlements, estate, investment, staff turnover, Qualified staff, commercial history, profit, governance..)
7. Disjointed care (commissioning, ...)

For people who are agitated and living with dementia their carers may learn to remove such cues as hat, coat and shoes.

Seeing these may cause increased agitation as a need to be elsewhere.

For #EndPJparalysis perhaps we can reverse this and use the sight clothes and footwear as a cue for 'get up & try to go'.
