Hodges' Model: Welcome to the QUAD

Hodges' model is a conceptual framework to support reflection and critical thinking. Situated, the model can help integrate all disciplines (academic and professional). Amid news items, are posts that illustrate the scope and application of the model. A bibliography and A4 template are provided in the sidebar. Welcome to the QUAD ...

Interactive Radio Drama Training - Theatre for a Change - Online

From: Ryan Borcherding

Learn how to produce Interactive Radio Drama (IRD) for a wide range of gender, SRHR, SGBV and COVID-19 behaviour change and advocacy objectives.

IRD is a unique social and behaviour change communication tool from Theatre for a Change. It has been used in multiple countries since 2010 to improve the sexual and reproductive health and rights of marginalised and vulnerable women and girls, with documented results.

IRD enables audiences to call in to the radio station and replace the main character in the radio drama, to show what they could do differently to change the story for the better. It enables behaviour change and advocacy to happen on a large scale. In Malawi, we reach over 550,000 listeners through interactive broadcasts each week.

We are now offering online training in our IRD approach to enable other organisations to use IRD in their gender, SRHR, SGBV and COVID-19 behaviour change and advocacy work.

Blush

"Blush is a radiator by Icelandic designer Thorunn Arnadottir that is covered in thermochromatic paint and both looks like and simulates capillaries. She says, 'Blush is a very important organ of the house. Regulates the temperature and keeps it warm and alive. Blue when cold, but blushes with red when warm.'"

A new citation of Hodges' model: "A multi-agent system approach to dynamic ridesharing for older people" 2020

Given the volume of new research published each year and even daily, I am always looking for validation of Hodges' model and my belief (and time ...) in the model's generic utility.

An email from ResearchGate this morning prompted a search, revealing the following conference paper by Iris Lohja, Yves Demazeau and Christine Verdier.

This a very rewarding read for me as the paper states that Hodges' is situated, person-centred, socio-technical and combines the individual and group.

"Situation Theory is a theoretical approach, according to which a system is defined as the composition of situation-related concerns. To collect information about these concerns and to address the user preferences BP, we use the Hodges’ Health Career Model (H2CM) [15]. It is a model centred around the person, based on the situation, considering all contexts (or as many as possible), and allows for simple modelling. One of the main reasons why this model is adapted to our context is that it allows for individualism and holism at the same time. We use H2CM to structure knowledge or features of older people around two axes – the vertical axis of individual and group and the horizontal axis of humanistic and mechanistic – which create four knowledge domains – Interpersonal, Sciences, Sociology, and Political. The vertical axis indicates our primary focus on the older person as an individual and as a group. The horizontal axis separates features into humanistic – related to the social aspect of the older person/people – and mechanistic – related to the technical aspects concerning the older person/people. Figure 1 shows the H2CM model for the passenger population, where we can see some features identified and classified into the four knowledge domains.
Modelling the passenger population with H2CM in IMOPOP helps to identify and include in the system their preferences and constraints, thus addressing the user preferences BP. A UML representation of a passenger agent is shown in Figure 2.

Table 1 compares the approaches we have considered for the modelling of the agents, according to our main criteria." p.54

I will post again and if possible with Figure 1 and Table 1 from the paper.

Figure 1 could be extended and Table 1 is a very useful approach by the authors, contrasting Hodges' model with other approaches.

"In this paper, we discussed about various MAS techniques for dealing with the first two blocking points. Viewing our multi-agent system as componential, we considered various models for modelling each of its components. We used the socio-technical Hodges’ Health Career Model, which originates from the social care domain but we still described as it is crucial for IMOPOP. It is used to model the older people as the agents in the system, addressing the user preferences blocking point. Given that we consider ridesharing as activity-based, we discussed about activities and proposed modelling the urgency and importance of these activities in the system. In the environment, we modelled agents’ points of interest and the main players in the ridesharing market." p.57.

Of all the corners you can pick* take care ...

... some are even more 'political' and expressive of power, individually and collectively, than when exercised right here.

*I remember at school 1970s - our drama teacher highlighting the people who have social awareness and those who do not. 'Social awareness' covers a wide range of attitudes, behaviour, manners,  literacies, intelligences ... and with ongoing unrest, campaigning, activism, legislation, policy and human rights we  have made progress. A counterpoint and sadness in the 21st C. is that - as ever - there remains much to do: many people [still] can not exercise a choice in terms of the corners they would like to reach.

Book review: "The Power of the 2 x 2 Matrix" iv

Yes, it is a literal reading but if I didn't 'see' Lowy and Hood's discussion of "The team goes to work" (p.74) with symptoms identification and "Listen, listen, listen" (p.75) I'd miss a trick.

In healthcare the team really matters; in mental health care (especially) it is a professional and therapeutic* ... duty to listen; symptoms are not enough, we must seek signs too; what goes unspoken? A 2x2 matrix once created and agreed can also help identify positive and negative symptoms, in healthcare we differentiate this in several ways. The individual whether psychosis or cancer; and the group (socially and politically) through the impact of constraints and opportunities. There's a 'Health Magazine Marketplace Matrix' (p.76).

Strategy is central with tactical and operational factors in business and commerce and chapter 6 deals with strategic frameworks. The chapter starts:

"Strategy is the art and science of competing more effectively than one's competitors." (p.91).

Below are two of the matrices described which I've placed within Hodges' model. Nursing is all about seeking, testing, trying, accepting, parking and respecting unexploited opportunities, not only 'in' the intra- interpersonal domain, but the other domains too. I will let you reflect upon the commodification of health and 'end of life'.

Beyond Customer Led Matrix p.96.
Discontinuity and Life Cycle Matrix p.101

The social and political domains are obviously well represented throughout the book: value, customer, prosumer, civics and much more. An example is the Librarian Scenario Matrix which comprises of the dimensions - Locus of Concern  and Social Contract (p.119).

There's mention of architecture in the book which in a business context is understandable. I can not find where I read it but recently the addition of 'architecture' as in 'care architecture' represents a misuse? This is not architecture. This book and Hodges' model makes concepts the bricks, mortar, spans and splines of architecture.

There is much more I could draw out. The Johari Window, individual frameworks - in which the quadrant's significance (size) varies, Myers-Briggs. In addition to a couple of references with the chapters, a notes section provides a full-list. The index is thorough and there are copyright notices for the many tables and figures.

A great book - just lacking one-other model, but I would say that!

Here are the previous posts:

Q. What is Hodges' model? A. It is NOT a 2x2 matrix

Welcome to the Fall 2020

Intima: A Journal of Narrative Medicine

We invite you to explore the issue.

In much the same way narrative medicine practitioners invite their patients to become storytellers, vulnerably disclosing their illnesses, we invited contributors to engage in their own acts of vulnerability to submit their poetry, art, media, fiction, nonfiction, Field Note, and academic pieces to the Fall 2020 issue of Intima: A Journal of Narrative Medicine.

More specifically, we invited submissions around the theme: Creativity in a Time of Crisis: Rethinking Vulnerability in Response to Care and Social Justice. Pen to paper, brushes to canvas, and strokes to the keyboard produced a wealth of submissions, many of which hearkened the specialized theme, to narrate the challenging public health and racial unrest that marred 2020. Whether the invitation arrived with much anticipation or as a surprise, we were heartened at the warm response we received and the quality of work we accepted for publication.

The pieces comprising the Fall 2020 issue are varied yet many evoke the images of 2020 as you read stanzas in a poem, gaze onto art, or pour over lines of narrated personal experience. Go to theintima.org to dip into the Fall journal today.
