THE PERIODICAL

The results of Menstrual Hygiene Day (MH Day) 2026 are in!

They show what is possible when thousands of organisations and individuals join forces. Advocates, NGOs, media, governments, communities, and corporates came together to drive awareness and action on menstrual health and hygiene (MHH). All with one goal: creating a #PeriodFriendlyWorld for everyone.

In 2026, we crossed the mark of 1,500 official partner organisations.
The MH Day movement continues to grow. 💪

And so does our impact.
This year, the team tracked more than 3,000 MH Day events, 28,300 pieces of media coverage, and 299,000 social media contributions!

Together, these efforts resulted in a new milestone: during the campaign period from 29 April to 10 June 2026:

MH Day collectively reached 1.135 billion people worldwide.

Isn’t that incredible?

That’s nearly one in seven people on the planet, and the biggest reach in the history of MH Day!

It shows that while MHH was a niche issue a few years ago, it is becoming more and more relevant for the mainstream of society.

  Read more about the
numbers,  trends,  and stories
behind MH Day 2026

Thank you for being part of this growing movement! Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld!

Afghanistan: Help women and girls in Afghanistan today

Five years after the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan, the de facto authorities have issued more than 100 decrees affecting Afghan women and girls and stripping them of their rights, freedoms, and dignity.

No other country has dismantled the rights of half its population through law, policy, and practice to the same extent.

At the beginning of this year, the Taliban issued a decree effectively
legalising domestic violence by allowing husbands to punish their wives.

And in May, another decree removed minimum age protections for marriage and made it harder for women to leave a spouse. This has increased the risk of forced and child marriage.

This is not just a loss of rights. It is the systematic
erasure of women and girls from public life.
Five years on from the Taliban takeover and the
exclusion of women and girls is being normalised.

This unparalleled crisis of women’s and girls’ rights is at risk
of being forgotten by the world.

International Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026

Facts & figures about MH Day and menstrual health & hygiene

About Menstrual Hygiene Day (MH Day)

  • MH Day is celebrated annually on 28 May to symbolize the average length of the menstrual cycle (28) and duration of menstruation (5).
  • It was initiated by WASH United and was first celebrated in 2014. WASH United is an award-winning non-profit based in Berlin/Germany, founded in 2011, with a focus on menstrual health and hygiene (MHH). WASH United focuses on strengthening the global MHH ecosystem by offering free, easy-to-use solutions for awareness, advocacy, and education, and engages in strategic advocacy throughout the year.
  • The mission of the MH Day movement is to create a period-friendly world.

A period-friendly world is a world in which menstruation is accepted as a normal fact of life and is no longer stigmatised. It is a world in which everyone is educated about menstruation from an early age. In a period-friendly world, everyone has access to quality and affordable period products of their choice. Everyone has access to period-friendly toilets. And in a period-friendly world, menstrual health services are available to everyone. It is a world where no one is held back just because they menstruate. (MH Day mission)

  • The impact of MH Day 2025: reach of 971 million people, 25,026 pieces of media coverage, 198,132 social media contributions, more than 2,000 events, and 1,350 partner organizations.

MAACAL: Statues Also Breathe

Catharsis Arts Foundation in collaboration with Obafemi-Awolowo University and 108 students, 2022

This exhibition presents a collaboration between Obafemi-Awolowo University, 108 students from all across Nigeria, and the families of the Chibok girls who were kidnapped by Boko Haram in 2014.

Inspired by the iconic terracotta heads of Ife, it was initiated by artists Prune Nourry and Ade Bantu and seeks to raise awareness on the plight of the missing girls, and to highlight the diversity of Nigerian culture. . . .

On Thursday I visited MAACAL - Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden, an art gallery  I first read about in FTWeekend Life&Arts, not long after first visiting Marrakech in 2023.

The main exhibit presents itself straight away after entering:

Statues Also Breathe, exhibition view, Art Twenty One, Lagos, Nigeria
 ©Dohdohndawa Photography/DDD Studios

A short but touching film in the gallery bears testimony to the fact many 'school girls' are still absent. Repetition is standard method in design. In today's manufactured world you might think what is so special about this? Until you are there physically, and walk through them. You see each one, a who: unique, an individual, a person taken away from where they belong.

As a white man from NW England, there was a moment when I realised: I was on the same continent where this had happened and is ongoing. Searching Youtube reveals other related videos concerning the exhibitions. It's strange watching them again as a check on their availability. A short video of an event to launch three new installations earlier this year is worth watching. Unfortunately, my phone failed until I got back to Marrakech, so I've no photos. I've three works in mind though.

I walked there, and back after trying to sort a taxi with a lovely couple from Germany and their son. Some taxis are limited to carry three persons. This is what arrived. The sun, even behind clouds that day, and flights taking off from the airport helped my sense of direction. The girls, seeking an education, did not have these means of navigation.

The garden at MAACAL was small but lovely. I hope to return one day, and well before then . . .

'The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2025 to Maria Corina Machado “for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”

In the past year, Ms Machado has been forced to live in hiding. Despite serious threats against her life she has remained in the country, a choice that has inspired millions of people. She has brought her country’s opposition together. She has never wavered in resisting the militarisation of Venezuelan society. Comment: Menopause - a global health and wellbeing issue that needs urgent attention

On 'X', I noticed a comment piece from the Lancet:

Menopause: a global health and wellbeing issue that needs urgent attention
Gayathri Delanerolle, Peter Phiri, Sohier Elneil, et al. The Lancet Global Health, Volume 0, Issue 0.
Publication History: Published December 18, 2024
DOI: 10.1016/S2214-109X(24)00528-X

As usual I searched 'Welcome to the QUAD' [W2tQ] for previous posts tagged 'menopause'. The result '0' was a surprise, as there are several posts re.'menstruation'

https://hodges-model.blogspot.com/search?q=menstruation

And many tagged 'women':

https://hodges-model.blogspot.com/search?q=women

And this despite, a partner and family members experiencing the effects and impact of menopause. I was also asked in the summer to sort a list of signs & symptoms for menopause that can be associated with mental health nursing.

Interesting to see reference to the Roy Adaptation Model in the paper:
Klotzbaugh R, Fawcett J. Gender minority persons’ perceptions of peer-led support groups: a Roy Adaptation Model interpretation. ANS Adv Nurs Sci 2023; 46: 59–74.
And to address the global health extent and context of menopause:
'The stigma is such that open dialogue is inhibited in the majority of LMICs and the first-generation migrants from these LMICs to high-income countries (HICs); the paucity of broader understanding and acceptance in society exacerbates the mental and emotional strain of menopause and can lead to social isolation, particularly in these stigmatised contexts.' [my emphasis]
If needed there may be a CPD exercise for student nurses, or those qualified with revalidation pending? Hodges' model (the template) can help in achieving a broader understanding of menopause, and women's health to include menstruation and social attitudes, beliefs and attitudes. The paper does not refer to shame, and self-stigma, which may prevent a person from seeking help? So, there is a reflective exercise in reading the text and mapping the recommendations in the paper:

Panel - Recommendations to improve health outcomes for individuals with menopause
  • Lifestyle modifications
  • Mental health support
  • Holistic approaches
  • Culturally competent care
  • Personalisation of hormone replacement therapy care
  • Peer support groups or social prescribing
  • Conduct comprehensive research
  • Improve accessibility
  • Understanding various risk factors, such as lifestyles, environment, and climate
If anyone has events, journal special issues for 2025 ... I can help publicise, please let me know.

CFP: History of the Philosophy of Pregnancy

Conference Venue:

Department of Philosophy, University of Dayton, Dayton, United States

Details

CFA: History of the Philosophy of Pregnancy

We invite authors to submit abstracts of approximately 500 words for a conference entitled “History of the Philosophy of Pregnancy,” hosted by the Philosophy Department of the University of Dayton, as part of its Richard R. Baker colloquia series (Dayton, OH, USA). The conference will be  held on October 6-7th, 2023. Please see below for details.

Keynote Speaker

Sara Brill (Fairfield University)

Our conference is motivated by the dearth of historical scholarship on the philosophy of pregnancy. Historical scholarship on reproduction tends to focus on the conception and development of the embryo  -- 'generation' and 'embryology' -- treating the developing organism as an independent entity. As a consequence, pregnancy is written out of the causal story. The goal of this conference is to recover a history of the philosophy of pregnancy and bring the work and challenges of the pregnant individual into focus.

We encourage submissions pertaining to all historical periods and are interested in approaches to the topic from different philosophical schools and cultural perspectives.

Examples of potential topics include the following:

  • How was pregnancy conceptualized across cultures and time?
  • How did commitments to autochthony shape conceptions of pregnancy and public policy?
  • What were the political ramifications associated with conceptions of pregnancy, miscarriage, fertility, and infertility?
  • How did slavery and colonial practices impact conceptions of pregnancy and birth?
  • How did historical discussions of individuality and individuation take pregnancy into account in the context of discussions of generation?
  • How did the practices of midwifery or obstetrics inform philosophical discussions of reproduction?
  • How has pregnancy been understood in the history of biology?
  • How was the role of the placenta in reproduction understood?
  • How was pregnancy understood across species? What significance did this have for understandings of human and non-human animals?
  • What impacts were maternal agency or mental life thought to have on  pregnancy?
  • How did pregnancy relate to ensoulment and the formation of persons?
  • How was the female reproductive body conceived relative to the male reproductive body? Were female bodies treated as inferior versions of male bodies or unique for their reproductive capacities?
  • What is the historical relation of sex or gender to pregnancy? What is the relation of physiological to cultural understandings of pregnancy, or vice versa?
  • How has the discourse on pregnancy and fertility intersected with the discourse on ableism and disability?
  • Why is there little, if any, explicitly philosophical writing on pregnancy in the history of philosophy?
  • What kinds of methods may be employed for the recovery of a history of the philosophy of pregnancy?
  • What does the history of the philosophy of pregnancy suggest for contemporary philosophy of pregnancy?

Please submit abstracts of ~500 words to histphilpregnancy AT gmail.com by May 15, 2023. Please include your name, institutional affiliation (if any), and paper title in your email. Papers should be suitable for a 30 minute talk, with Q&A to follow. Acceptance decisions will be announced by July 1, 2023. Submissions from members of underrepresented groups in philosophy are especially encouraged. Subsidized accommodations are available on a limited basis.

Please contact histphilpregnancy AT gmail.com with any questions.

Organized by Dr. Myrna Gabbe (University of Dayton), Maja Sidzińska (PhD candidate, University of Pennsylvania), and Evangelian Collings (PhD candidate, University of Pittsburgh)

New Voices Conference Women and their Body

Dear all,

Please find here the invitation for attending the Conference Women and their body in March 2023:

The conference Women and their Body aims at breaking the silence!

Together, the Humanities and the Cultural Studies take a stand on the explosive topic Women’s right over their Own Body. Recent and even past events in numerous countries ask for a statement, formulated by many scholars from different research fields.

Recent events have shown that it is urgent and fundamentally important to shed new light, through philosophical, linguistic, literary, scientific, medical and artistic perspectives, on the female body and the position of women in relation to their body. Too often it seems that women do not have the right to determine their own body, although men have never been deprived of this right. The question of power over the body is strongly linked to the distinction between men and women. It seems that men have more rights and power on their own body than women. But how is this possible? What is the status of the female body in culture and society? Why is the female body both, an object of desire and a battlefield for demonstrating male power? To what extent have medicine and technology interfered in recent years with the female body and with what consequences?

On March 15th, 16th and 17th 2023, the international, hybrid conference, organised by Dr. Jil Muller, at the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists in Paderborn, directed by Prof. Ruth E. Hagengruber, will shed light on this issue. Everyone is welcome to attend the conference, via Zoom or in person in Paderborn. Please note that the in-person places are limited.
