Hodges' Model: Welcome to the QUAD: temperature

Hodges' model is a conceptual framework to support reflection and critical thinking. Situated, the model can help integrate all disciplines (academic and professional). Amid news items, are posts that illustrate the scope and application of the model. A bibliography and A4 template are provided in the sidebar. Welcome to the QUAD ...

Host|Guest by Hospital Rooms

To mark its 10-year anniversary, arts and mental health charity Hospital Rooms presents a major exhibition at Victoria Miro this September.

Bringing together leading contemporary artists from across the Hospital Rooms programme, the exhibition features re-creations of monumental new artworks created for hospitals this year, alongside artists the organisation has collaborated with over the past decade. It reflects on the impact of transforming NHS mental health environments through art, while looking ahead to expanding access to creative programmes nationwide.

To which care/knowledge domain does this video belong?

P.S. There isn't a domain called 'bin' but there is plenty of waste.

There isn't one called denial, or ignorance either, but you will find them in abundance too.

Rest assured (if you still can!) that each domain carries its own truth.

Single, dual aspect in architecture. What of care?

'The challenge of overheating in Britain is our buildings are built to retain heat in our temperate climate. Energy efficiency regulations for new dwellings now require high insulation and few drafts to reduce the need for heating in winter, but broadly make it harder to cool homes in summer. Residents of cities are particularly vulnerable to overheating due to urban heat island effects.

There are two ways buildings can be cooled – mechanical methods (primarily air conditioning) and passive cooling methods that use the design of the building to limit heat gain and retain cooler air inside the dwelling.

Passive cooling is much easier in dual-aspect dwellings with windows on multiple external facades, which as shown in Figure 1, are contrasted to single-aspect flats that face out on to only one external facade. Dual aspect allows breezes to blow through dwellings and easily exchange stuffy indoors air for cooler air from the outdoors. Even if outside temperatures are high, cross-ventilation or overnight air exchange and limits to solar gain (daylight indoors) can keep indoor environments cooler than the outdoors.'

In Hodges' model at least, we seem to have dual aspect covered.

That's why we say the model is situated.

... "Quine bases his “confirmation holism” upon observations of Pierre Duhem (1914 [1954]), who drew attention to the myriad ways in which theories are supported by evidence, and the fact that an hypothesis is not (dis)confirmed merely by some specific experiment considered in isolation from an immense amount of surrounding theory. ...

... Thus, a thermometer will be a good indication of ambient temperature only if it’s made of the right materials, calibrated appropriately, and there aren’t any other forces at work that might disturb the measurement—and, of course, only if the background laws of physics and other beliefs that have informed the design of the measurement are sufficiently correct. A failure of the thermometer to measure the temperature could be due to a failure of any of these other conditions, which is, of course, why experimenters spend so much time and money constructing experiments to “control” for them. Moreover, with a small change in our theories or background beliefs, or just in our understanding of the conditions for measurement, we might change the tests on which we rely, but often without changing the meaning of the sentences whose truth we might be trying to establish (which, as Putnam 1965 [1975] pointed out, is precisely what practicing scientists regularly do)." ...

Blush

"Blush is a radiator by Icelandic designer Thorunn Arnadottir that is covered in thermochromatic paint and both looks like and simulates capillaries. She says, 'Blush is a very important organ of the house. Regulates the temperature and keeps it warm and alive. Blue when cold, but blushes with red when warm.'"

WHO Housing and health guidelines

"Recommendations to promote healthy housing for a sustainable and equitable future"

The quality of housing has major implications for people’s health. Housing in cities is of particular concern, with the world’s urban population predicted to double by 2050 and, with it, the demand for housing. In both developed and developing countries, improving housing conditions and reducing health risks in the home is thus critically important.

Improved housing conditions can save lives, reduce disease, increase quality of life, reduce poverty, help mitigate climate change and contribute to the achievement of a number of Sustainable Development Goals, including those addressing health (SDG 3) and sustainable cities (SDG 11). Housing is therefore a major entry point for intersectoral public health programmes and primary prevention. [Foreward, p.xii]

"You see, when
I
lived far away, you knew
I was there, and I kept something for you,
even though you had never seen
a polar bear or an ice floe . . .
I
kept your wild, cold, raw. ...

When you see it whole,
you remember that
it’s not polar bears over there,

and snakes over here;

 it’s one place,
one strange special place.

It comes as a
whole
or not at all."

"... They tell us that temperatures are still unbearable, that it’s consistently scorching hot. And it’s getting worse as the weather heats up. Workers are fainting every day. To cope, they use a traditional technique called “coining”, where they scratch their skin with coins to bring blood to the surface of the skin. It’s meant to relieve the stress and fatigue caused by the heat. ..."

A Kin Tai factory worker getting “coined” by a coworker on Monday.

When people are exploited and in the absence of health services and evidence-based health care information, they may resort to traditional remedies to try to solve acute health problems. When the control of the work environment is also beyond the worker's control then acute problems and risks to health are bound to follow.
