Host|Guest by Hospital Rooms

To mark its 10-year anniversary, arts and mental health charity Hospital Rooms presents a major exhibition at Victoria Miro this September.

Bringing together leading contemporary artists from across the Hospital Rooms programme, the exhibition features re-creations of monumental new artworks created for hospitals this year, alongside artists the organisation has collaborated with over the past decade. It reflects on the impact of transforming NHS mental health environments through art, while looking ahead to expanding access to creative programmes nationwide.

London: 'The Weight of Being: Vulnerability, Resilience and Mental Health in Art'

In London currently, 20th - 23rd I was on my way to Bankside Gallery and walking by Temple Place, #2 to be precise, on a board outside I read:

'The Weight of Being: Vulnerability, Resilience and Mental Health in Art'

Taking in the mental health and illness of artists, gender, domesticity, industrial and political struggle, COVID, and Gaza I spent and enjoyed a two hour detour. The building is also amazing. The exhibition is on until 19 April 2026, closed on Monday's and today 21st February. Before I share some text from their website, the interior of the building was a 'virtual' experience, but without the technology. Helpfully, the exhibition is spread across several rooms.

'Curated by Angela Thomas, this new exhibition explores artistic expression and mental health. Through depictions of deeply personal and collective experiences, it examines the powerful ways in which artists capture vulnerability, resilience, and their search for solace.

Including the work of a diverse range of twentieth century and contemporary artists and their varying perspectives, The Weight of Being showcases how artists have captured the psychological and emotional impact of societal pressures, resilience in the face of adversity, and existential uncertainty.

Alongside dozens of artworks drawn from galleries and collections across the UK, the portraits, landscapes, and figurative studies of the lesser-known artist John Wilson McCracken (1936–1982) are woven throughout. Denied the opportunity to return to the Slade School of Art following a period of hospitalisation for mental health reasons, McCracken spent much of his career in Hartlepool, producing work that reflects a profound sensitivity to the emotional and social pressures of his time. Shaped by personal and collective struggles, his art offers a deeply human perspective on the exhibition’s themes, revealing how external forces imprint themselves on the mind, body, and creative spirit.' Continued . . .

The building as a whole - Two Temple Place is owned and run by a registered charity, the Bulldog Trust.

I will definitely (hopefully!) visit again, on the way or returning from the South Bank of the Thames. The video below presents key aspects of the building's amazing interior and history:

Young Carers Choir - 'Love is Enough'

'Young carers face many challenges throughout the year and Christmas can be an especially tough time.

When their friends are having fun, young carers’ responsibilities don’t stop. That’s why we’re delighted Sir Ed Davey and the Bath Philharmonia’s Young Carers Choir have come together to record for a wonderful Christmas song – Love is Enough.

The song, in support of young carers through Carers Trust and the Bath Philharmonia, has been written by young carers and shines a light on their lives.'

"It has been another challenging week for the UK's NHS as nurses were offered a paltry 1 per cent pay rise. But the artist Banksy is to show his support by auctioning "Game Changer" (2020), a painting initially made to hang in University Hospital Southampton, and now sold to benefit the NHS. The hand-painted, signed work, which shows a kneeling child playing with a toy nurse instead of more traditional superheroes, is estimated by Christie's at £2.5m to £3.5m".

Marathon, half-marathons and other journeys

In 1984 a holiday in Athens brought with it the opportunity to visit Marathon. As a cross-country runner at school Marathon had always held a magical place in my mind. It did not disappoint either. Although I did not exactly follow in the footsteps of Pheidippides, the journey from Athens to Marathon was an experience in itself using the bus. And now - is it really 2,500 years since he made that journey?

Now there are many other marathons run the world over.

On the 21st March The Fresh Air Fund in NYC are having a half-marathon. As many of our readers are USA based and perhaps around NYC this may just be the spring (or autumn?) well-being event for you?

Seriously, there are half-marathons the world over. Slightly closer to home for me the Alderney Half Marathon & 10 km Fun Run looks and sounds a great event. Walking or running wherever you are of course just getting out and about helps. In the meantime all the best to the Fresh Air Team, indeed all runners (and cyclists) everywhere!

Well-being, Teddy Bears and the NYC Fresh Air Half-Marathon

These days 'well-being' crops up everywhere it seems. Literally in the crops and technology used to grow our food, in response to the rise of obesity and its personal and social impact. Diabetes, bullying, the need for exercise, personal space and quality time the well-being list and its associations is as long as the number of journals and magazine issues and covers it features in.

For Hodges' model though where can well-being be found?

I believe there is a risk that 'well-being', whilst it undoubtedly has a role to play in health and social care, education, media, policy (oh and lifestyle), runs the risk of diluting the critical health messages. Not in the sense of not dealing with critical health problems but not as bad as putting your health at risk. If you do not do X, or Y and put your well-being at risk this is not as bad as putting your health at risk...? Do people really make the right connection? One response to my initial question is as follows:

Emotional Well-beingPhysical Well-being
Social Well-beingPolitical Well-being

Since well-being is a rather nebulous concept the risk is that -

'Well-being' may become* a sort of Teddy Bear comforter.

Well-being is very helpful in opening doors to walk-in centres, well man and women clinics and in damaging the stigma that surrounds mental health. For me though well-being is not to be found in the h2cm matrix, Well-being is the totality. It is how well we are in all the care domains. How well are they integrated? Well-being brings a whole new meaning to global health. Collectively this also includes that spiritual yearning found within humanity. Miss one domain out and like a pack of cards... ...

So next time you drag Teddy up the stairs easy
as you go....

Speaking of well-being: running while you can - is a great mantra because the ability to run is a great gift for those of us who can; whether 100s of meters or marathons. Here is news of what looks a truly great event across the Pond:

Hi again Peter

I sent you an email last week and didn't hear back so I thought I would try again. The Fresh Air Fund is still looking for runners and sponsors to join our Fresh Air Fund-Racers team for the NYC Half-Marathon on August 16th. It would be a huge help if you could post a mention of this exciting news on Hodges Model: Welcome to the QUAD. This is a great way to participate in NYC's premier summer road race while helping Fresh Air Fund children. Please feel free to use anything from our site...

Last summer's NYC Half-Marathon was a huge success and the Fresh Air Fund-Racers raised more than $125,000. We are also still in need of Friendly Town hosts for next month. Host families open their hearts and home to a NYC child who would not otherwise have the opportunity to escape the hot, crowded city streets. Please let me know if you are able to post or have any questions, and if you could send me the link that would be fantastic.

Thank you so much, (A pleasure Sara - all the best for next month!)

Patiala Health Foundation Launches SevaMobile Trauma Initiative

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Organization focuses on ways to combat traffic and provide critical and emergency trauma care to those in need.

(Weirton, WV / Patiala Punjab India) - The Patiala Health Foundation, a registered 501-C3 non-profit based in the United States, has started its second phase of providing critical health care services to those in need. Today the organization is announcing the launch of three “SevaMobiles”, or charity vehicles, that will bring trauma care to injured people instead of waiting for them to get to hospitals.

The SevaMobile Initiative is a major innovation in Indian healthcare because it will shorten the time from emergency call to treatment by 50 percent. For many, these precious minutes can be the difference between life and death. Traffic in major metropolitan areas is a two-pronged danger in India. Firstly, many trauma deaths are caused by automobile accidents and secondly, the traffic itself slows down the ability for care professionals to reach victims and transport them to hospitals.

Trauma-related deaths occur every 1.9 minutes in India, according to a 2004 report in the Indian Journal of Critical Care Medicine [IJCCM]. With traffic increasing, trauma will move from its current ninth position to become India’s third leading cause of death by 2020. The 10 percent increase in deaths from injuries in Punjab between 1983 and 1992 demonstrates the urgent need for trauma facilities in the region.

The SevaMobile Initiative will consist of a fully functional mobile trauma unit that also provides emergency critical care on site. In addition to this ambulance, two SevaMobile motorcycles will also be able to navigate through traffic and narrow roads to provide first response immediate care and stabilization. This first level of care will allow for victims to be quickly treated while more comprehensive care, via an ambulance, is on its way. The service will be offered free to those who cannot afford medical services and will be funded by the Patiala Health Foundation.

"In our analysis of urban healthcare, we found that there were many efforts underway to build new structures and hospitals, but there was still a real need to reach victims faster," said Patiala Health Foundation's Dr. Amrik S. Chattha. "We believe the SevaMobile Initiative will be a major innovation, impacting the lives of people by treating them quickly and more efficiently. We also believe that pre-hospital care, such as that offered by the SevaMobile, should be a right to all injured victims."

The organization is currently planning to partner with public and private hospitals in the area to transport patients to larger treatments centers. Patients who cannot afford the medical fees will be treated free of charge courtesy of the Patiala Health Foundation. Those who can afford the service will pay for their care, enabling the program to partially fund itself, while also creating a longer sustainability of operations.

"We want to help those in need, but also build a system that supports itself," noted Dr. Harish Sood, another Patiala Health Foundation board member who is spearheading the SevaMobile effort on the ground in India with a collection of local trustees. Additionally, fifteen retired alumni of Patiala Medical College are volunteering their services and time to assist with the project.

SevaMobiles are planning to commence operations this winter. The project is funded by the Patiala Health Foundation whose funds have been raised by Indian-Americans across the United States through six benefit events in Ohio, California, North Carolina, New York and, most recently, Virginia. The organization is also actively looking for additional donors, corporate partners and grant giving organizations interested in improving health care for low-income citizens within India.
