Hodges' Model: Welcome to the QUAD: dyad

Hodges' model is a conceptual framework to support reflection and critical thinking. Situated, the model can help integrate all disciplines (academic and professional). Amid news items, are posts that illustrate the scope and application of the model. A bibliography and A4 template are provided in the sidebar. Welcome to the QUAD ...

Post-Partum Document. Documentation III: Analysed Markings And Diary Perspective Schema (Experimentum Mentis III: Weaning from the Dyad)

1975, Mary Kelly  © Tate

'Chalk and crayon drawings by Mary Kelly’s son are overlayed with transcriptions, annotations and reflections based on their interactions as he began nursery. These panels are the third group of a six-part series, each documenting a formative moment in Kelly’s son's early life. Kelly has stated that Post-Partum Document is not ‘autobiographical’. She instead uses her story to suggest ‘an interplay of voices – the mother’s experience, feminist analysis, academic discussion, political debate’. The work subverts romanticised depictions of the mother-child relationship, presenting the experience as inevitably bound up with societal norms and gendered expectations.'

Books... Bakhtin's centripetal and centrifugal forces in relationships

"Bakhtin's dialogism is theory of the contradicting process as realized in the ongoing tension between centripetal (i.e. unifying) and centrifugal (i.e., differentiating) dialectical poles. Each pole of the centripetal-centrifugal contradiction is constituted in the particulars of the situation at a given point in time. The centripetal pole consists of whatever phenomenon or quality occupies the dominant or normative position, whereas the centrifugal pole consists of whatever phenomena are subordinate, peripheral, or secondary. Substantial fluidity characterizes centripetal and centrifugal poles, in that a phenomenon that is dominant at one point in time can be subordinate or secondary at another point in time, and vice versa.

Because dialogism is a general theory of sociality, rather than a context-specific theory, Bakhtin did not pursue the particular  phenomena that constitute centripetal and centrifugal forces for any specific context, including the context of personal relationships. Thus a first step in extending dialogism to personal relationships is to particularize Bakhtin's abstract centripetal contradiction." p.141.

"Her life to date reads like something dreamt up during a Disney story conference: pretty American teen fulfils a life-long dream of a career in quantum physics at both Harvard and Oxford. And the fantasy cash register goes right on ringing because our heroine has not one career, but two. Between all-night stints in the lab she leads a double life as a professional ballet dancer.
At this point one the grown-ups in our imaginary brainstorm might lean in and suggest that maybe the two-career thing was a mite, er, far-fetched? But Dr Merritt Moore, quantum physicist and alumna of four major-league ballet companies (Zurich, Boston, Norwegian, and English National), is living proof that this crazy scenario can be lived in real time by anyone with the ability to devote themselves body and soul to the dreams that devour them." p.12.

The QUALCARE Scale - in Hodges' model

Clearing yet another piece of notepaper from the 1990s, when I wrote (from the abstract):

"The QUALCARE Scale is an observational rating scale designed to quantify the quality of family caregiving to home-dwelling elders in six areas: physical, medical management, psychosocial, environmental, human rights and financial."

(extra note - 53 item Likert scale format.)

I had encountered Hodges' model in 1987-88 [ Manchester Polytechnic College, now Manchester Metropolitan University, CPN(Cert.) course ], but the initial (and thus far only) website appeared in 1998 (-2015):

Hodges' model: Not just rectilinear, but bubbles too ...

"To the holistic absorption by the One – upon which the success of so many religions and philosophies was premised for centuries – Sloterdijk opposes the proposition of a dyadic theory of intimacy. This is a distinction between an acute appearance of unity, experienced from a cosmic position of being fully contained inside a whole, and an ontological insistence that this position is itself contingent on a constitutive relationality. It is not possible to attain an overview, an outside bird’s-eye view of spheres (Neither Sun Nor Death, p263). By contrast, ...

"Sloterdijk’s anthropological theory of shared, auto-poetic space, carries ontogenetic force. This is, by example, expressed in the discussion of the relationship between birth and thought, or between the birth of a child and that of a world.35 Sloterdijk dedicates the bulk of Bubbles to birth, providing a detailed discussion of intrauterine dwelling, including the sensory presence of liquids, soft bodies, the early experience of spatial boundaries, fluidal communion in the medium of blood, the constitution of an intimate acoustic bipolar sphere and, above all, cohabitation with the placenta, conceived as primal, anonymous companion. Intrauterine space is approached as the most vivid illustration of the spherological principle according to which coexistence precedes essence. At once enclosed and porous, poetic and connected, intrauterine space is the production of a dense and connected ‘two’: ‘What we call ‘mother and child’ in the abbreviated terms of subject-object language are, in their mode of being, only ever poles of a dynamic in-between’ (Bubbles, p320)." p.47.

By contrast, ... the relational ontology of spheres aims to rehabilitate the relation at the expense of the essential, and the situation at the expense of components (p151). Against any form of substantialism, a relational ontology emphasises the centrality of being-with [Mitsein] in relationships of mother and child, mesmerist and subject, therapist and patient, foetus and placenta, and so forth." p.47.
