Human-Technology Lecture Series – 25 March

Dear Colleagues,

The BCS Sociotechnical Specialist Group and the STEIN-UX Research Group at UWL are launching the online Human-Technology Lecture Series, connecting critical perspectives on digital technologies and design with insights about people, organisations and society.

Our first lecture is:

Thinking Language, Fast and Slow: Speed, Data, and Decolonial Inquiry

📅 25 March 2026
🕛 12:00–13:00 (UK time)
💻 Online
🎟 Free to attend

Speaker: Dr. Lindsey DeWitt Prat, whose work explores how language, culture and technology intersect in the development of AI systems.

Talk Synopsis:

As language increasingly becomes training data for AI, timing begins to shape power. Decisions about datasets are made quickly, while their consequences unfold over much longer horizons. What does it mean to design responsibly with — rather than after — underserved language communities?

Drawing on industry work with African languages and large language models, alongside research examining how AI data is produced globally, the talk reflects on why anthropological, participatory and human-centred approaches need to be integrated early in technological development.

Free online mindfulness programme & ¥3800 (≈ £20) reward - research study

Dear all,

My name is Francesco Saldarini. I am a postdoctoral fellow at Waseda University (Japan) and a visiting researcher at the University of Surrey. My research focuses on investigating the (potential) effects of mind-body practices (e.g., mindfulness and martial arts) on psychology.

The study takes place entirely online and will require you to participate in two or three main experimental sessions, when you will be asked to complete a task and answer some questions. Each session will take approximately 40 minutes to complete. Moreover, you will get to participate in an online NHS-approved mindfulness-based programme! The programme is pre-recorded and you can flexibly choose when to attend a session. I will also reward you ¥3800 (≈ £20) for your participation.

This study was approved by the Waseda University research ethics committee (REF : 2024 - 314).

If you are interested in participating in the study and wish to know more about it, please contact me at:
w.iac23317 AT kurenai.waseda.jp.

🗣️ Solving or Resolving Palestinian Human Rights Issues: Relationship "Normalization" | Mohamed ‘Arafa

This session will be the first in the series of conferences “Jurisprudential Dialogues on Human Rights”, which is designed to promote exchanges on topical issues involving human rights and the role of the courts of justice.

The aim of this session is to reflect on the violations of the human rights of the Palestinian people — an enduring state of affairs that transcends political or religious lines of judgement. Over the decades, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been marking the international landscape, sparking divisions, human misery, and far-reaching geopolitical consequences.

This session will be led by Professor Mohamed ‘Arafa, Professor of Law at the University of Alexandria and Adjunct Professor of Law & the Clarke Initiative Visiting Scholar at Cornell Law School. Joining in will be Professor Rita Ribeiro, from the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Minho, and Zaina Awartani, PhD researcher at the School of Law of the University of Minho and the School of Researchers of the Research Centre for Justice and Governance (JusGov). The event will be chaired by Sergio Ruiz Díaz Arce, Doctoral Integrated Researcher at JusGov.

Exhibition: Manchester (and online) “Our Lives, Our Privacy” c/o ICO

This a.m. I heard on BBC R4 Today 07.41.30... news (and interesting discussion) -

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0029rg4

- of an exhibition in Manchester that may be of interest, if you're local, but it is also accessible online:

https://ico.org.uk/about-the-ico/media-centre/news-and-blogs/2025/04/come-and-visit-manchester-s-latest-exhibition-our-lives-our-privacy-to-celebrate-the-ico-s-40th-anniversary/

Our Lives, Our Privacy
'A digital exhibition featuring 40 items that tells the tale of how privacy has been at the centre of some of the biggest events and milestones we remember over the past four decades was launched last Autumn, but now a physical exhibition has come to Manchester.
From 2 April to 30 June, we will be displaying the exhibition at Manchester Central Library in the first-floor exhibition space. Members of the public are welcome to pop in and see the items that have shaped our lives and our privacy.

The ‘Our Lives, Our Privacy’ exhibition highlights poignant events in history including the launch of social media, the News of the World phone hacking scandal and the Covid 19 pandemic to name a few. It also looks at technological advancements like smart devices and raising questions about the future, including how accurate the episodes of ‘Black Mirror’ really are.'

Moving Online Symposium: 30th Jan 2025 - Coventry University, UK

In recent years, there has been increased attention paid to the ownership of dance. There has been important work done in the area of dance and copyright1 as well as the examination of the way ownership is managed via social norms through the ‘commons’2 and as a form of ‘gift’.3  The increased circulation of dance online through archives, video platforms and social media sites has led to multiple debates about the copying and re-embodiment of dances,4 reigniting important conversations about appropriation, acknowledgment and credit.5 At the same time, there has been a flourishing of work on dance and performance ontology. For example, long-standing debates about the ephemerality of dance and performance have been reframed through discussions about the ‘post-ephemeral’6and materiality.7 There have also been new perspectives offered on questions about the nature of dances and the way in which they exist.8,9

The Moving Online symposium explores how these two areas intersect in the context of online dance and performance. The event builds on and shares the findings from Moving Online: Ontology and Ownership of Internet Dance (the project and event is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council [grant number AH/W01002X/1]).

The register for this event please complete this form. The draft schedule is available here.

The event is free to attend. We are offering limited number of £150 bursaries to support travel and participation by freelance artists. More information is available here. Deadline for applications 8th January 2025.

The symposium is taking place in-person at Coventry University. We plan to live stream some of the panels. If you would like to join the live stream, please select this option on the registration form.

Who can take part to this survey?

Any individual or organization who has interest in maternal health and well-being. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Representatives of women's groups
  • Health workers (midwives, OBGYN, nurses, neonatal nurses, paediatricians, psychiatrists, psychologists, community health workers...)
  • Experts in human and sexual and reproductive rights, public health, health promotion, gender, mental health, economics, humanitarian, etc.
  • Academics and researchers
  • Government organizations
  • National civil society organizations / NGOs
  • International agencies / UN agencies
  • Private sector
