Study invitation: Examining the Experiences of Black African Nurses in the UK Healthcare System

PARTICIPANT INFORMATION SHEET

Examining the Experiences of Black African Nurses in the UK Healthcare System

You are being invited to take part in a research project exploring the experiences of Black African nurses working in the UK healthcare system.

For the purpose of this study, Black African nurses refers to male and female nurses aged 18 years and above who migrated from an African country to the UK and have worked within the UK healthcare sector for at least one year. This includes nurses who arrived in the UK on a work visa and are currently working in the NHS, care homes, or private healthcare organisations. It does not include individuals who later changed their education or career pathway after settling in the UK. Please read the following information carefully to help you decide if you want to take part.

What is the purpose of Study?

The purpose of this study is to better understand the experiences of Black African nurses who have migrated from African countries and are working within the UK healthcare system. Research and workforce reports suggest that internationally recruited and racially minoritised nurses may face unique professional and personal challenges, yet their lived experiences are often under-represented in research and policy discussions. This study aims to bring greater awareness to how race, culture, identity, and migration background may interact with workplace environments and organisational systems to shape nurses’ professional experiences and wellbeing. By giving participants the opportunity to share their perspectives in their own words, the research seeks to highlight areas where support, inclusion, and fair practice can be strengthened.

It is hoped that the findings will contribute to improved understanding, inform future policy and workplace practices, and support ongoing efforts toward equity, inclusion, and culturally appropriate support within the UK healthcare workforce.

What will happen if I decide to take part?

If you agree to take part in this study, you will be invited to an online interview using Microsoft Teams at a time that is convenient for you. Before the interview begins, you will have the opportunity to ask any questions about the study before confirming your consent to participate.

During the interview, you will be asked some brief background questions, such as your professional background and migration route. The interview will focus on your experiences of working as a Black African nurse in the UK healthcare system, including workplace experiences, identity, support, challenges, and sources of strength or resilience.

With your permission, the interview will be audio-recorded to ensure your views are captured accurately.

... ... ...

Call for Participants: Survey on Trauma-Informed Archival Practice

Dear all,

My name is Emily Hill, I am a current master's student at the University of Glasgow completing my dissertation titled:

To what extent is Trauma-Informed Archival Practice understood and used within the Archival Sector? How effective are the methods of support available to Archivists?

The aim of this dissertation is to explore the breadth of knowledge within the Archival sector surrounding Trauma-Informed Archival Practice, where professionals have learned about Trauma theory and if the mental health and secondary trauma support available is accessible and effective. There is no prior knowledge of Trauma-Informed Practice needed to participate, as these concepts are explained within the Participant information forms.

Participation in this survey will take approximately 15 minutes, including the Participant Information and Agreement forms which should be viewed and signed before participation in the survey questions.

All survey responses are received anonymised, with the data being analysed in correlation with other respondent data on a question-by-question basis.

I would be very grateful for your participation in this survey, and if you have any questions or concerns you wish to address prior to participating, please email me at 2650467H AT student.gla.ac.uk.

You can access the survey here.

Thank you in advance for your participation!

Best wishes,
Emily Hill.

v WCCS26: World Conference on Complex Systems 20-22nd April

Day 2 Tuesday 21st April (Revisiting) Keynote Speaker: Abderrazak El Albani -
Emergence of Intercellular Cooperation: At the Origins of Eukaryotic Complexity
Session Chair: Khawla Tadist

This keynote was fasacinating. As I begin this post on the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough, who would have us all see life in the broadest terms, value life and diverse habits, and Earth as our collective and shared home.

Abderrazak El Albani explained the search for LUCA the last universal common ancestor - 3.8 billion years ago. Many dates in the emergence story of humanity, have been progressively pushed back. The first fire, art, languages, our co-habitation and intimate relationships with Neanderthals.

In healthcare, as a practitioner you have to be aware of your scope of practice. At WCCS, scale (as in iv) was ever present across research in complexity, and complex systems. Not just physical size nano-to-mega but temporal too, as we journeyed billions of years. Several of the slides are presented here:

https://www.synchrotron-soleil.fr/en/news/discovery-oldest-macroscopic-planktonic-eukaryotes-contribution-nanoscopium-beamline (with a reference).

There is a video (French): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bh3t26cU7xc

I asked a question, which may have been psychological preparation for own presentation to follow. Listening, I could see how the work Abderrazak El Albani and his team are doing, could be readily translated to the search for life on Mars. There has been a 'routine' interchange of planetary material between Earth and Mars over the aeons. Fitting surely that the sedimentary rocks sought lie in  A key lesson, is that light helps us see, but not all lights are equal. Light sources brighter than the sun become incredible scientific instruments. The longevity of the dinosaurs was highlighted, at least 140 million years. There is no comparison with homo sapiens then, even as those dates have been pushed further back in time. Time defeated me as I tried to make the observation that even the dinosaurs did not make it to their first galactic birthday (c.250 million years - and what a carousel). I like the thought (slide) of 'Earth as Memory'.

What really counted was the expressed concern about what is happening now: in the Anthropocene.

The second keynote:
Nigel Gilbert - Policy in a Complex World: Towards Complexity-Aware Policymaking
Session Chair: Ali Idri

Was helpful to me, as the dated conundrum of benefits realisation from our technologies, and evidence-based policy still leaves a gap (for me) within the POLITICAL care/knowledge domain of Hodges' model. The illustration/graphic elements of Prof. Gilbert's slides were a brilliant complement to the content:

Prof. Nigel Gilbert - WCCS26 21st April

I wonder if within policy the constant in the equation is continuity and as a quantity it is an unknown? This seems to the case in health policy, across successive governments. You may (also) find this chart informative: https://www.cecan.ac.uk/news/the-visual-representation-of-complexity/

Perhaps, a key factor in complexity is the fact that nothing stays the same, so continuity is nuanced? Michael Quinn Patton's book Developmental Evaluation was noted re. learning while doing. Now I wish I'd held on to Qualitative Research & Evaluation Methods (4th ed.). The discussion of 'obesity system map' and 'whole systems analysis' was appreciated here.*

Since Marrakech and WCCS, I've noticed acknowledgement in the literature that 'research' is currently flooded with AI tools. I'm sure PRSM - Participatory System Mapper is a welcome addition, (as noted in iv) tools to facilitate participation are much needed:

Collaborative Creativity

The Participatory System Mapper (PRSM) is an app that makes it easy to draw networks (or 'maps') of systems, working together collaboratively.'

I will definitely check this resource out; and CECAN. After Prof. Gilbert, the next Track included my contribution, which I will return to. Rather distracted, I have a somewhat blurred slide, with: 'The global tensor of educational research is' then headed 'Learning poverty. Being unable to read and understsand a simple text; with points 1-4.'. I'm not sure which presentation this was, but zeroed in on the literacy theme, and the word tensor. Another slide refers to '6. Topological substitution for Success'. I think it is (writing this is helping recall!):

Topological Patterns of Academic Success: Insights from Complex Network Analysis

'Always Label Your Axes' - Zazzle.

Before that there was another model, as the next keynote speaker: Chris Bauch demonstrated during the conference wearing a t-shirt:

"AI: Though these projects do not work solely within a logic of 'representation' they do, almost as a side effect, produce awful images. I am thinking in particular of the film still from Aluminium and the blackened lung hooked up to a coal fired computer. If the 'contraptions' you make can be thought of as diagrams of socio-technical relations, what are the qualities of the images they produce? To what extent are these images necessary by-products of the processes.

GH: We can see the images arising out of the forces that threaten to break the machine, or assemblages arising out of its in-betweenness. Its unfinished nature always requires the imagination of the participant/viewer to finish the job, fill in the details. This is a powerful strategy." p.164.

Note 'Anti-disciplinary' in this issue too:

Will investigate anti-disciplinary, as this appears to strike a discordant note in nursing in Hodges' model promulgating genericism. A quick check was encouraging leading to MIT Lab, but then disappointing in terms of personnel and resignations - but a lead for the future (inter- multi- transdisciplinary and Hodges' model).

Research on the use of the Image Description feature on Twitter

via SOCIOTECH list

A colleague of mine at The University of York is running a study needs some help (message below):

My student, Arwa Alnajashi is looking for participants for a study about the use of the Image Description feature on Twitter. You don’t need to know anything about this feature to participate, but you need to be over 18, tweet images reasonably regularly (perhaps once a week or so), and have a public Twitter account. You can live anywhere in the world, but need to tweet mainly in English.  All participants will receive an Amazon gift voucher worth GBP 10 (or equivalent in local currency).

The study will involve analysing some information about your tweets over a month period, but all information will be completely anonymous and confidential and we will not store your tweets. Your commitment will be to answer two questionnaires, at the beginning and end of the study, this should take no ore than 20 minutes.  By being in the study, you will also hopefully learn some helpful information about how to use this feature in Twitter.  You will be able to withdraw from the study at any point if you wish and have your information deleted.

This study has been approved by the Physical Sciences Ethics Committee of the University of York.

If you have any questions please contact Arwa Alnajashi at aa1764@york.ac.uk
or me Helen Petrie at helen.petrie@york.ac.uk

If you would like to participate, please send Helen an email and she will send you a link to the study.

Thanks for your interest!

c/o Marschalek (2017) Public Engagement in Responsible Research and Innovation

This blog often features EU research initiatives and conferences and a European project (2014-2016) to build a Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) Toolkit also has a conference series and various publications. Marschalek's dissertation is a invaluable resource on RRI, drawing on the need for reflection, reflexivity, critical thinking and highlighting many models within sciences and participative methods. Reading the following you will hopefully glean the basis for my interest in the document and what might follow the project overall.

1.2 The Relevance of (Self-)Reflection and Reflexivity
Scientists are not typically asked to anticipate future societal effects of their work. ...
... But reflections, particularly on non-intended effects, are rarely undertaken. Reflection is not (yet) viewed as an integral part of scientific work. Many other more important issues need to be addressed within a scientific career. ...
... Studies like this and others have revealed that researchers are rarely encouraged to self-reflect. ...
... What is needed is to »step into the helicopter« (Schuurbiers, 2011, p. 784) to look at one’s own work from a distance. A look from the outside and feedback also help reflection. »Researchers are not accustomed to viewing their decisions from a normative perspective or discussing the normative aspects of decisions explicitly. ...
... Unfortunately, not many reflection tools are available as yet. Quality standards and codes of conduct should »stimulate the reflection of the relation between one’s own values and that of external parties« (Asveld, Ganzevles & Osseweijer, 2015, p. 585) and there are self-reflection initiatives to motivate individuals to reflect on the impact of their work, e.g. a »Hippocratic Oath for individual scientists« (Sutcliffe, 2011), but even fewer ask organisations for self-reflection.
