Hodges' Model: Welcome to the QUAD: mental capacity

Hodges' model is a conceptual framework to support reflection and critical thinking. Situated, the model can help integrate all disciplines (academic and professional). Amid news items, are posts that illustrate the scope and application of the model. A bibliography and A4 template are provided in the sidebar. Welcome to the QUAD ...

https://depijp.rialtofilm.nl/en/films/queen-at-sea

So many difficult conversations. All on their own unique continuum in terms of sense-making for all concerned.

A 'new' diagnosis at age 60; versus one at 44. Families seeking to control disclosure of the diagnosis from the patient. Clinical and family debate about this.

Finding a person locked-in the house, while their partner 'nips' to the shops. A person having their freedom to go out, on their regular walk  -despite acknowledged risks. (When they are known by people on their route - community care in action. Receiving a call from a neighbour; or the neighbour who knows where you park and can intercept you, on arrival or departure to express concerns. Or, even as you venture out for a walk with their neighbour of many a year. Categorise them as you will: [nosey, caring, concerned, public spirited, neighbourly, or (healthily) curious]?

Other discussions of grief at the loss of a person they have loved - in every way. A grief that presents new dark dimensions to what has gone before. Complicated by a state of early onset of memory loss. An ongoing disintegration of personhood and identity. An inability to consistently express thoughts, wishes, and choices. An inability to give informed consent. A loss taunted by retained physical desirability. What does love, sex, compassion mean now? What is the sum now, of love expressed over 'x' years? Hearts hollowed out, of what can be so important to a couple. Not vital to all. But for others, a source of conjoined affirmation, joy, warmth, companionship, a celebration of life and being human.

How to share that grief even amid close friends and family, who cannot cope themselves and withdraw? What of the preparedness of professions to manage such situations? What structures are in-place for team meetings, clinical supervision and inclusion in training, especially safeguarding?

Previously: 'capacity' : 'law' : 'safeguarding' : 'health career'

I can't count the number of times in a nursing home, when a visit by a friend has re-ignited the flame of memory, passion and personhood; even if temporary. It was never my place to thank the friends for visiting, but they've made a difference, so crucial to acknowledge the courage on their part. Making the journey, being present and with. So difficult too, for families.

DNR is a critical aspect of health care that will not go away. It can't as part of the interface (to put it mechanistically) between life, death, and quality of life and death. Ever since and even prior to the Liverpool Care Pathway, the issues raised in medical care, humanity, dignity and respect, ethics, professionalism, integrity and governance are challenging to reconcile.

Hodges' model can play a part in critical thinking about not just a troublesome concept, but the interaction of several and making sense of them and the situation to hand - and heart.

As such Hodges' model isn't going away either.

"Democratic politicians as diverse as Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Churchill, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Pompidou, Mitterrand, Blair, George W. Bush, Chirac, and Sharon all lied about their health. ...

... Between 1906 and 2008 seven Presidents are judged to have been mentally ill while in office: Theodore Roosevelt (bipolar disorder), Taft (breathing-related sleep disorder), Wilson (major depressive disorder), Coolidge (major depressive disorder), Hoover (major depressive disorder), Johnson (bipolar disorder), and Nixon (alcohol abuse). Many despots-such as Hitler, Stalin, Saddam Hussein, Pol Pot, Idi Amin, and Robert Mugabe-have been branded by the press and public opinion as suffering mental illnesses. Lord Owen argues neither Hitler nor Stalin were mad in any sense the medical profession recognizes (whereas Mussolini and Mao had depression, possibly bipolar disorder)."

'Faith' in leadership?

'Choice'?

by Owen David

I remember Lord Owen's book being published, over a decade ago and heard radio interviews at the time (BBC Radio 4, Start the Week?). Not sure why I didn't pick this up as the disciplinary bridges are stark and clear (now!): PSYCHO-POLITICAL and GEO-PSYCHIATRIC. The importance of the issues the Daedalus Project addresses, now within Maudsley Philosophy Group is not just suddenly 'self' evident*, but is of importance for the world's population- impacting upon global safety and security.

Even since Lord Owen's book the rise of AI adds complexity (as ever).

An update papers, Hodges' model, website...

Here is an update on writing projects ...

WEBSITE - DRUPAL:

A few months ago I decided to cancel the web hosting. The same provider and for the second time. Lack of progress is nothing to do with them. Despite best intentions, the account was essentially redundant, apart from one occasion when I was ready to start transfer of a site including Brian Hodges' lecture notes, as part of what would be an archive. I still have the pages - HTML all ready to 'go' - somewhere... The host company were very good, offering to take me through the process. I will git back on the horse. The journey is still very enjoyable, even if frustrating.

Last weekend at the Northwest (England) Drupal User Group - NWDUG Unconference in Manchester, I gave an eleven slide presentation on the ultimate in vapour ware. Even with no site the day was very useful, the community great. At month end I will be following online DrupalCon Amsterdam. Really disappointed not to be there, but the currency situation nails it, on top of my not having earned the trip.

As posted last Tuesday -

Book: "The Empty Space"

- I've been crossing the Pennines and enjoyed visits to see Mr Hodges at his home. It would be marvellous to get to a point were I can 'demonstrate' some progress on the web front. The Drupal community continue to try to improve the migration and update processes. This can certainly help me. A Drupal developer questioned me a while ago if I'm being too loyal. Is Drupal the right tool? I am considering this ...

PAPERS:

As to papers I'm determined to try to clear the desks of draft papers. I'm not duty-bound to write, just learning-bound. In May a journal editor invited me to write about Hodges' model. The brief was more specific, write about the model but not in general terms. I was directed to relate the model to at least two public health themes.*

Trying to put a map on the map is challenging.
Everyone wants data, evidence, findings, method ...

Last month I arrived at a final draft and am now advised to answer my own queries and then submit. So sounds positive thus far. I really will diligently check the submission requirements.

The other paper is a bit of a saga, having started before the Part 1 - MRES studies at Lancaster in 2014. The paper overall concerns Hodges' model, threshold concepts and deprivation of liberty safeguarding. It is now in two-parts, feedback on part one has been favourable but still seeking people with time to read and critique- so hopefully on-track with this too.

*Public mental health is always also implied as far as I am concerned.

Top 4 Branding Tips: "Between MIND and BODY lies the soup"

HODGES' SOUP

Full of holistic & integrated goodness
Colouring agents & agency guaranteed
Quality Additives Assured QAA™

INDIVIDUAL
|
INTERPERSONAL : SCIENCES
humanistic ----------------------------------------- mechanistic
SOCIOLOGY : POLITICAL
|
POPULATION

You would like some soup.

Yes.
We should start here.
[For as the ancients recognised:
"In-between MIND and BODY lies the soup."]

As we can (and do) debate exactly 'where' and 'when' action begins.

Do you know you're hungry?
Do you know you want soup?
Do you know where it is?
Did you buy some three days ago?

If you don't, do know how to make this happen?
Can you ask someone for help if needed?
Do you know where the kitchen is?
Is your kitchen, one that you can walk in
(also known as your's),
or is it one of those "off-limits" designs
(see below right)?

Like many of the things we take for granted
Soup IS Knowledge

There you are! In the kitchen.
You are aok opening the can, carton.
Home-made excellent!
[And the bread! Wo!]

Can you reach for and open things?
Grip, twisting it is quite an operation -
fingers, hands, wrists, balance.

We don't want you to spin around do we?
Most have a opener of some sort,
maybe a drawer or a rack full.
Perhaps something to sit - perch on would help?

Can you read the instructions?
tiny print and poor eyesight

What about Imperial and Metric?

Take care with that can?
Safety first, cooker, gas...?
Are you up to date with Tetanus jabs?

Where's the plasters?
1st Aid Kit.
"Is there a Dr in the house! :-/ "
Quick - grab the ice!

How does the soup taste?
Taste?
Yes it is  subjective ... but...

Are you on a big hike?
If so, it's the best soup you ever had?
Attitudes to food inc. soup are laid here.
Somehow it tastes better in company.
Like its constituents soup is best crowdsourced.

Here is the place
and down the agees
 that the crowd (family-friends)
together with home-made
are ingredients made for each other.

Ah! They're here.
My Carer = company + soup ...

How much time don't we spend on a communal meal. An event in itself.

Thanks Stan your soup was delicious!

Whether a kitchen,
outside oven,
or camp fire
this place is a powerful place.

Assessment for Personal Independence Payments

Powerful too are foodbanks and soup kitchens.

Oh dear.
Yet another new carer = lost time
'dear' indeed.

Stop!
Are those vegetables ok?
What's the BBE - Expiry?
So much food goes to waste - tragic.
Is there an Occupational Therapist in the team? What about a Physio, or do we have to refer on?

Who controls the labelling
on this product anyway?

c/o Mauri Kaipainen - Conceptual Spaces @ Work 2016 over

Dear CS @W 2016 contributor or participant,

This message was sent to all who registered to the conference.

The second conference on Conceptual Spaces @ Work took place at Södertörn University, Stockholm on Aug 25-27, preceded by the co-located CS360 workshop on the 24th. The international event with physically present or virtual participants from all over Europe, Australia and the US was a great intellectual success. A number of applications and theoretical developments of the theory of conceptual spaces was presented, followed by lively and multi-faceted discussions that will no doubt cross-fertilise further intellectual offsprings. It is beyond the reasonable to exhaust the entire repertoire presented, several talks discussed various forms of reasoning in terms of CS. A few related CS to theory and history of science. Some other took even up fundamental epistemological questions of the paradigm.

In the panel discussion, a number of potential ways were identified in which CS might contribute to - if not solving - perhaps easing current hard problems of the world that often boil down to different or incommensurable conceptual spaces. The practical topic of the organization of the CS community was also discussed. Strong support was given to the idea of the community evolving as a self-organising network instead of being forced into some strict format. Regarding the organisation of the next CS @W conference, the two Antonios Chella and Lieto promised to look into the possibilities to organise it in Italy, the timing of course remaining open at this moment.

2nd Workshop Conceptual Spaces at Work videos (updated Apr 2026)

I seem to be late with this post, two of three days of the conference are already done.

It seems like yesterday I was in Lund trying to find Hobykrok B&B. In the distance cranes were building what I was told was to be a scientific facility - an atom smasher of some sort. That was 2012: now the Max IV [ well it had to be ;-) ] Laboratory (a synchroton) is complete.

You can catch up on video presentations since Thursday at:

https://sh-medieteknik.solidtango.com/categories/cs-w-2016

Sessions on this the final day will also be streamed live.

Updated 26 April 2026: I notice this post is popular at present, and yet links are dated - broken. Please find the YouTube list below c/o Steele Price, which may offer some compensation:

Hodges' model: the puzzle of holistic care

Like many day-to-day 'customer' facing businesses, it is very difficult to get health and social care just right ('just' is not good enough).

Hodges model jigsaw puzzle
If you are faffing about with clothes and belongings when an emergency ensues you have just become an adornment yourself: one that is in the way. In the SCIENCES domain fail to assess mobility and balance and who is going to catch them when they fall? Not you: health and safety! It's a problem for the mental health team is it? Could this confused gentleman be constipated? Nice place is it? OK, crease your eyes up and tell me where the door is; what about the hand-rail?

Are you ready to crowd surf?

That's good because there is an abundance of outstretched hands ready in the SOCIOLOGICAL domain. If, however, you do not attend to the patient's instructions regards information sharing - even if it was a relative you spoke to - just where are you going to hide?

(Ouch - that's gotta hurt! Sounds like they dropped you.)

Fail to assess mood and motivation comprehensively in the INTERPERSONAL domain and will you be able to say how Mrs Green really feels, behind that Mona Lisa smile? Will you know how to observe her, will you and your colleagues know just what you are looking for?

Did you miss that opportunity with the patient, carer - family in the POLITICAL domain to resolve the (ongoing Sunday afternoon) issue? You know the one about mum's medication, agitation, the appropriateness of the care environment and the outstanding referral to the community mental health team? Well yes, you might wonder what that buzz is. It's a complaint just passing you by(e).

Basic, holistic, integrated, person-centered care and much more. Now that's the real puzzle.
A puzzle worth spending a whole career trying to find the pieces - never mind the solution ....
