Hodges' Model: Welcome to the QUAD: editing

Hodges' model is a conceptual framework to support reflection and critical thinking. Situated, the model can help integrate all disciplines (academic and professional). Amid news items, are posts that illustrate the scope and application of the model. A bibliography and A4 template are provided in the sidebar. Welcome to the QUAD ...

Dear Editorial Office,

Dear Dr. Jones,

My name is Editorial Office, and I am writing on behalf of the selected journal. I came across your article, "A Conceptual Mapping Exercise of Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards in Residential & Community Care Using Hodges' Model and Threshold Concepts". Its focus on deprivation of liberty safeguards, Hodges' model, older adults caught our attention. I would like to invite you to consider a new and unpublished contribution to the selected journal.

For this invited contribution, we are pleased to offer a Full APC Waiver. Invited manuscripts receive priority editorial handling, and we aim to provide an initial editorial decision within one week. This invitation does not imply acceptance, and editorial standards remain unchanged.

If you are interested, a working title or short abstract is enough for an initial discussion. If your current work is not closely aligned with this journal, you are also welcome to share your present research topic and we can check whether another journal in our portfolio may be more suitable.

I would be glad to answer any questions and look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,
Editorial Office
the selected journal

Dear Editorial Office,

Re. 'the selected journal: Invited Contribution – Full APC Waiver'

Thank you for your communication and recognition of my recent paper.

Unfortunately you have not specified the 'selected journal'. Without this detail it is difficult to proceed at all, or ascertain what benefit is provided by the 'full APC waiver'.

I am more troubled, however by your name. Is it really 'Editorial Office'?

Again the specific journal matters here. If it is materials science, chemistry, or quantum physics or related this is (slightly?) less of a problem. Otherwise, I do worry that with Hodges' model being person-centred your being de-personalised does not sit very well with the purposes and values of Hodges' model.

It is however reassuring to learn that I should not take your invitation to suggest acceptance, and that accordingly your editorial standards remain intact - especially in these times.

Again, even if I were interested, I am at a loss to provide either a working title, or abstract.

I do hope you understand my difficulty?

Although perhaps I ask too much.

Can it be - this IS in fact the journal?

'The Selected Journal'?

Yours Faithfully,

Mr^ P Jones

Records Management Journal - Editor Opportunity

 All

After nine years in post, I am stepping away as a Co-Editor of the Records Management Journal. My colleague Sarah Demb has also recently completed her term. A double issue on recordkeeping and the law is about to land and we have a strong series of articles for next year. We are therefore advertising the opportunity for someone to take forward this important Journal which contributes in research and practice, and does publish content globally. The role of Editor provides a first hand opportunity to lead and network in this field, positioning special themed issues and ground breaking research. The work is supported by its strong Editorial Board.

The full advertisement is at:

I am very happy to answer any further enquiries.

Kind regards

Elizabeth

A *prospective* journal issue devoted to the "Health Career - Care Domains - Model"

Last month I was contacted regards the possibility of acting as associate editor for a journal issue devoted to Hodges' model, or a related theme.

At present with part-time studies having started in January and a residential week to following at the end of March I have rather got my hands full. I hope to post in the near future on how these studies are helping to shape my ideas.

One clear 'result' is the prompt to engage with residential and nursing homes in preparation for a 'small research study' I have to complete this northern Spring. I've two meetings organised thus far with home managers.

A journal issue is a great prospect however, a giant step in fact - for the conceptual framework and myself (I'd also contribute an editorial). Perhaps I could share this project with someone similarly minded regards the potential of Hodges' model in health and social care and without in education and informatics? It seems that this invitation will stand even if I can only pick it up in the future, end of 2015-2016...

In the sidebar, below the bibliography I've listed a publications to-do list that could be extended:

  • Hodges' model, structure, content and applications
  • taking the 'career' out of Hodges' model and putting it back;
  • curriculum development;
  • reflective practice;
  • case formulation;
  • holistic care (and related perspectives, but in informatics, SOCIO-TECHNICAL);
  • the theory - practice gap;
  • threshold concepts;
  • and conceptual spaces;
  • integrated care;
  • Nursing theory: future history - why they still matter;
  • quality assurance and care values;
  • multidisciplinary care and interprofessional education;
  • diagrams that care;
  • student contribution;
  • patient, service user contribution;
  • .... ?
The distance learning Technology Enhanced Learning course is stimulating many other insights. The learning is very collaborative and a great demonstrator in so many ways. The recent trip to London and meeting at London South Bank University also stressed the need for publishing in the 'popular' nursing press. Recent writing (recovery, recovery model) and studies also points to not being tied to original purposes of Hodges' model - but going beyond this ... far beyond: global health integration, health literacy, self-care, methodological approaches to critique and investigate Hodges' model. ...

a Book? and DSLs on Weds night

On Wednesday night I plan to attend -

ThoughtWorks GeekNight Manchester - The 5 Ws of DSLs:

Domain Specific Languages (DSLs) have been around for a very long time; however, the past 2 years have brought a resurgence of interest to the topic. DSLs are a great idea, but they are the most beneficial when used appropriately. This talk will discuss who DSLs are designed to help, what is a DSL, when you should create a DSL, where you should apply DSLs, why DSLs are important, and how to get started with DSLs. We will begin at the introduction level, almost no previous knowledge of DSLs is necessary.
The other week I received an e-mail with a proposal: a future book and a role acting as an editor. The theme would extend the book chapter on Hodges' model, Michel Serres and (for me) would include conceptual frameworks for global health. I approached a few publishers about this global health aspect about 18 months ago. What other actual and potential tools are out there? What cognitive and practical tools could Africa, South American, Australasia and Asia ... bring to the table?

This is a ways off yet, which is why I need to know more, but needless to say I am definitely interested. It's a big responsibility (and here is me without any formal PRINCE-X training). I do enjoy reviewing and critically appraising documents and this could be a truly marvellous collaborative project.
