Dear Dr. Jones,

My name is Editorial Office, and I am writing on behalf of the selected journal. I came across your article, "A Conceptual Mapping Exercise of Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards in Residential & Community Care Using Hodges' Model and Threshold Concepts". Its focus on deprivation of liberty safeguards, Hodges' model, older adults caught our attention. I would like to invite you to consider a new and unpublished contribution to the selected journal.

Thank you for your communication and recognition of my recent paper.

Unfortunately you have not specified the 'selected journal'. Without this detail it is difficult to proceed at all, or ascertain what benefit is provided by the 'full APC waiver'. 

I am more troubled, however by your name. Is it really 'Editorial Office'?

Again the specific journal matters here. If it is materials science, chemistry, or quantum physics or related this is (slightly?) less of a problem. Otherwise, I do worry that with Hodges' model being person-centred your being de-personalised does not sit very well with the purposes and values of Hodges' model.

It is however reassuring to learn that I should not take your invitation to suggest acceptance, and that accordingly your editorial standards remain intact - especially in these times.

Again, even if I were interested, I am at a loss to provide either a working title, or abstract.

I do hope you understand my difficulty? 

Although perhaps I ask too much.

Lavoisier: Math - Chemistry; Quantity, Quality, Principle ...

The philosophy of science, can not avoid being viewed historically, which leads us to learn how mathematics literally took hold, from physics, to chemistry and biology. The application of mathematics to chemistry provides many and ongoing insights:

'Curiously enough, Kant’s own student, Jeremias Benjamin Richter (1762-1807), would only a few years later disprove his professor with his PhD dissertation On the use of the mathematical method in chemistry (Richter 1789). It laid the groundwork for stoichiometry as an algebraic approach to chemistry, including what was later called the ‘law of constant proportion’ that John Dalton used for his atomism on chemical grounds (Richter 1792-3, Dalton 1808). Moreover, at the time of Kant’s writing, experimental philosophy was taking over most of the centers of European research to become the mainstream methodology of modern science, which would later denounce the ideal of a priori knowledge in science as ‘mere’ metaphysics. Although some philosophers of mathematical physics still adhere to that ideal today, Kant was a late partisan in the struggle for the methodological priority of mathematics in the study of nature as it was exemplified by the old field of ‘rational mechanics’. Yet, his view on science became marginalized as much as his verdict on chemistry, that it would be alien to mathematics, was refuted.'

The pitfalls presented and Schummer's 2.4 A methodological suggestion for defining mathematical chemistry are helpful.

Maths is filled with tragedy, but the personal manifestation in my lack of ability, pales to insignificance to the many scientific and human tragedies history reveals. Consider Galois, and Lavoisier:

‘Only a moment to cut off that head and a hundred years may not give us another like it,’ lamented the 18th-century French mathematician Joseph Louis Lagrange. The head in question had belonged to the French aristocrat and chemist Antoine Laurent Lavoisier, who was executed at the hands of French revolutionaries on 8 May 1794. Lavoisier’s ideas changed the face of chemistry. He is best remembered for overthrowing the phlogiston theory, but perhaps his greater and more lasting achievement was to impose order on the language and symbolism that have shaped the thoughts of chemists.'

In an essay in the Charles Coulston Gillispie's essay in the history of scientific ideas, Chapter VI. The Rationalization of Matter, describes how Lavoisier sought to develop an algebraic approach:

'But what is most interesting is Lavoisier's mode of representing these results, so correct in quantity, so wrong in principle. In order to sec what he was about, one has to follow him into some detail. It is obvious, he writes, that acidification of a metal involves many variables-heat, concentration, chemical affinities, etc. each of which is a force acting with characteristic energy. Therefrom results a problem complex and difficult of solution: [my emphasis]

"Better to exhibit the state of the question in this respect, and in order to show at a glance the result of what happens in metallic solutions, I have constructed formulas of a sort, which could at first be taken for algebraic formulas, but which have not the same object, and do not derive from the same principles . . ."'

Gillispie concludes his illustrated exploration of Lavoisier:

'Is this not the most tantalizing memoir in the history of chemistry, and in Lavoisier's the most appealing? Here alone, one gets a sense of modesty. He never claims for these expressions the dignity of algebra. "We are still very far from being able to introduce mathematical precision into chemistry, and I beg, therefore, that no one consider these formulas . . . as more than simple annotations, of which the object is to ease the labors of the mind." (But compare this disclaimer with what he says of algebra itself in the Method of Chemical Nomenclature: "Algebra is the analytical method par excellence: it was invented to facilitate the labors of the mind, to compress into a few lines what would take pages to discuss, and to lead, finally, in a more convenient prompt and certain manner to the solution of very complicated questions.")' p.245.

Richardson et al. 'The entities enabling scientific fraud at scale are large, resilient, and growing rapidly'

Abstract

'Science is characterized by collaboration and cooperation, but also by uncertainty, competition, and inequality. While there has always been some concern that these pressures may compel some to defect from the scientific research ethos—i.e., fail to make genuine contributions to the production of knowledge or to the training of an expert workforce—the focus has largely been on the actions of lone individuals. Recently, however, reports of coordinated scientific fraud activities have increased. Some suggest that the ease of communication provided by the internet and open-access publishing have created the conditions for the emergence of entities—paper mills (i.e., sellers of mass-produced low quality and fabricated research), brokers (i.e., conduits between producers and publishers of fraudulent research), predatory journals, who do not conduct any quality controls on submissions—that facilitate systematic scientific fraud. Here, we demonstrate through case studies that i) individuals have cooperated to publish papers that were eventually retracted in a number of journals, ii) brokers have enabled publication in targeted journals at scale, and iii), within a field of science, not all subfields are equally targeted for scientific fraud. Our results reveal some of the strategies that enable the entities promoting scientific fraud to evade interventions. Our final analysis suggests that this ability to evade interventions is enabling the number of fraudulent publications to grow at a rate far outpacing that of legitimate science.'

Publication list - Peter Jones

Previously, I used to maintain a publications list, one that runs from the year 'dot' (ego eh!). The bibliography in the blog's sidebar serves this purpose, also being (much) enriched by other papers that use/cite Hodges' model. 

I decided to revisit the exercise. Successful at interview late in 2019, for a part-time (variable hours) tutoring role, no teaching opportunities followed as COVID intervened.

Reflection, Revalidation, RCN Congress and Research

Thinking Out Loud: Journal 'Regulars'

Like many people I looked forward to experiencing RCN Congress again in June. Now of course Congress itself is a casualty of COVID-19.

Last May as already posted, I picked up several nursing journals too. Having time(!) I've read about reflection, I submitted the required reflective accounts to complete my revalidation last month (so good through to March 31 2023) and I've time to reflect now.

Reading some of the papers and browsing through the journals I notice one has "CPD reflective questions" which are specified for full-length article submissions. Here are some examples from one journal issue:
"If a patient presents with red flag signs of impeding airway obstruction, consider the aspects of the 6Cs in nursing and reflect on the care, compassion, and communication required to the patient and family.
Consider the different dimensions of a person-centred climate of a long-term care setting.
Reflect on the nurse's role in the provision of person-centred care in an older adult residential setting.
How could you make the care of patients in your setting more person-centred?
Reflecting on the case study, what do you consider may help nurses in recognising the condition early and minimise the need for investigations?
Reflect on how the time perspective [can] be an indicator of health and quality of life in people with HIV or another patient group.
Consider how the time perspective can be incorporated into the health care of people with HIV.
Think about how nurses can assess the time perspective in people with HIV."
If you understand Hodges' model then you will appreciate how the model can facilitate reflection on all of the above.

The contents page of many publications usually differentiate between 'features', or 'special focus' and pages listed as 'regulars'.

For quite a while I've not only worked on papers (two advanced drafts at present) but (quietly) wondered about those 'regular' pages and what would it take for journals to adopt Hodges' model as a common resource?

Of course, this begs questions of legitimacy, evidence-base, standards ... and as I have acknowledged Hodges' model is no panacea for a practitioner's or a health system's limitations. Hodges' model itself may constrain the adopted perspectives of readers; as opposed to as I believe, liberating them? If all the posts here were analysed, what is the holistic bandwidth of the content?* If Hodges' model was adopted what trends, if any, would be revealed? If students used Hodges' model to reflect on their own well-being in year 1 - year 3 what would they learn? Are there wells of reflection about which reader's reflections would congregate? Would this in turn be influenced by other recognised biases in publishing and the way the above questions are selected?

It would still be amazing to see Hodges' model as a regular and universal prompt. Even as a research project - the aide-mémoire it is intended to be. The journal would then actively engage with its readership and provide invaluable CPD.

My new folder is already open for the next three years ...
