Hodges' Model: Welcome to the QUAD: concept

Hodges' model is a conceptual framework to support reflection and critical thinking. Situated, the model can help integrate all disciplines (academic and professional). Amid news items, are posts that illustrate the scope and application of the model. A bibliography and A4 template are provided in the sidebar. Welcome to the QUAD ...

Beware of the Concept

Yesterday Alan Ayckbourn's gold-nugget-laden book -

The Crafty Art of Playmaking by Alan Ayckbourn. Faber, 2004, softcover, ISBN 0571215106.
https://www.concordtheatricals.co.uk/s/45898/the-crafty-art-of-playmaking

- found a new owner. Beforehand, I turned up the following helpful advice (or, 'obvious rules'):

ix Introduction

'The following is an attempt to describe, as far as I can, this double process [writing and directing, PJ]. Some of it is quite probably unique to me and contains procedures and practices that it would be highly unwise for others to try and copy. The rest is really just plain common sense. But if I've learnt anything it is that it never hurts to point out the obvious occasionally, certainly in the theatre - to actors, directors or writers and sometimes even to designers, stage managers and technicians. Often we quite wrongly suspect simplicity. We go digging around in the creative sand trying to make.our art more meaningful, somehow 'deeper'. Generally all we do is end up with our heads entirely buried, presenting the audience with our rear ends.'
Obvious Rule No. 3
If you don't have the initial inspiration, put down the pen,put the pencil back in the jar, switch off the computer and go and dig the garden instead.

..
'At its most successful, theatre views things from a human standpoint. It is after all the most human in scale of all the performance media. My feeling is that that's also a good place for a dramatist to start, at the human level. As a playwright it may be your intention to build a vehicle to take us to the stars. But do make sure you have people aboard.

Initial inspiration - that essential starting point - comes in all shapes and sizes.' p..9.
Obvious Rule No. 49
Beware of the Concept.

DIRECTING

'Don't be talked into anything you feel instinctively you'll regret later. If you must have a concept (God save us from that word) then let the concept be something that's worked out between you. Let it spring from the play and not from the fact that the production manager has 5oo square metres of black lino left over from their last production. I once heard the fateful words, 'I think it's about time we did something with mirrors.' If at all possible, try and persuade the producer, whoever it is, to let you make as many scenic decisions as late on as possible. There will always be an intense pressure to decide everything before you start. This can be fatal.' pp.118-19.

In pencil I noted: 'Hodges' model is different. So, don't panic.' Is it? Really?

I've saved this for the last:

'Then there is the new old playwright. Far more difficult to deal with. They have probably nursed this script for twenty-five years and they're damned if you're going to mess it up for them when they've waited so long. Especially someone your age who wasn't even born when their harrowing play about World War Two was still raging, dammit.' p.110.

It's not that I believe I'm a (potential) playwright, it's the learning.

The Science of Conceptual Systems - and Hodges' model

Wallis, S.E. The Science of Conceptual Systems: A Progress Report. Found Sci 21, 579–602 (2016). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10699-015-9425-z

From the conclusion:
'The approaches presented here do not provide a ‘‘map’’ for advancing the sciences. Indeed, none is available because we are advancing across that new terrain. What it does provide is a compass suggesting a new and potentially exciting direction to travel. Historically/traditionally, scholars have travelled about the countryside of the social/behavioral land making useful observations and gathering interesting data. They have often staked claims regarding the importance of their terrain. They could not advance more purposefully because they were guided only by intuition. So, they did not know what direction was ‘‘forward’’ although it seemed to have something to do with empirical analysis. Today, with the creation of a new science, we have a new direction.

When we do have a choice between theoretical maps, generally, and metaphorically, this paper suggests that we should choose to create and use roadmaps with many dots connected by many lines; not maps with few disconnected dots.' p.594.

There is also a glossary [pp.594-599] that includes:
'Integral thinking

Understanding (or attempting to understand) the world from a transdisciplinary perspective where those many perspectives are interrelated'
'Integrative propositional analysis (IPA)

Combined processes of qualitative and quantitative analysis involving rigorous hermeneutic deconstruction of propositions found in formal texts including the rigorous reintegration of propositions from those texts following a structured methodology. Also a process of meta-analysis for investigating conceptual systems to determine the Complexity of conceptual systems (diversity of concepts) and the Systemicity of the conceptual system (connectedness between concepts)'

'Mental model

A representation within one’s mind about how the world works. Useful for understanding and engaging the world and for making predictions'

'Parsimony

Generally, the understanding that a theory is better when it is smaller. Or, as small as possible while including ideas that are necessary or useful. Ockham’s Razor is a common example'

Axiology, concept, horizon

"The hypothesis that thinking is founded in valuation requires for its development what philosophers call "axiology," the philosophic study of values. Of course, values are not phenomena that float into view, stimulating a "philosophy of values" to study them. Rather, it will be argued that values should be conceived of as the universal character of everything. Axiology, therefore, is the study of things with regard to their value dimension. An axiology of thinking is a study of the various roles of value in thinking." p.12.

"An image is the horizon in terms of which our definitions of its contents makes sense.  It is like a mental picture of the rough outlines of the world: it handles information by giving each datum a position relative to the rough outlines." p.36.

"A concept is a way of mentally grouping various components whose combination is valuable because of a normative measure. The "real" identity of things comes from the normative measure of which their de facto harmony is an approximation." p.84.

"1. The picture we have painted of human nature is centered on the notion of action as purposive, symbolic, and social - actions both reflective of prior norms and creative of new ones through the instrumentality of choice. ...

3. Their courses are modified by belief and interpretation, fear and hope, recollection and anticipation, symbolism and value.

2. Human lives thus do not ride on fixed rails; they do not follow trajectories already laid down by physics supplemented by biology. ...

4. The newborn child, considered simply as a biological unit, is indeterminate as a human being -

- the texture of its life is still to be filled out largely by human effort, that is to say, by culture, history, education and decision." p.41.

It is politicians' and policy makers' role to help realise human potential and societal progress: human AND now biospheric flourishing.

Video: Concepts for Nursing Practice, Giddens

With an email seemingly lost I have registered and applied for a review copy of Gidden's Concepts for Nursing Practice. The 2e is published next month. I do hope for a positive response.

Gidden's approach, also proposed by others clearly has a great synergy with Hodges' model in concept-based learning and the learner's career. The most interesting aspect of this is to try to respond to the short-comings of a purely conceptual basis for curricula. I'm sure this is possible combining a pragmatic view of knowledge, an evaluation research design, threshold concepts and conceptual spaces with Hodges' model.
