Hodges' Model: Welcome to the QUAD: health and safety

Hodges' model is a conceptual framework to support reflection and critical thinking. Situated, the model can help integrate all disciplines (academic and professional). Amid news items, are posts that illustrate the scope and application of the model. A bibliography and A4 template are provided in the sidebar. Welcome to the QUAD ...

Are the lines open? Is the train running? "Wigan Coal and Iron"

"Nos. 7 and 8 pits were a short distance away from the main colliery and were known as Brookside or New Zealand Pits. No coal was raised at these pits when Wigan Coal Corporation took over, but they were used for pumping and ventilation. Shortly afterwards (in 1931) they were filled up.

Wigan Coal and Iron

A very tragic and bizarre accident happened here on 13th April 1945 when Ludovic Berry, a locomotive driver employed by the Coal Corporation, was moving 13 loaded wagons in sidings over the filled up No. 7 shaft which was 12ft. diameter and 400 yd. deep. Suddenly the ground collapsed under the leading wagon which fell into a large cavity followed by the rest of the train and the locomotive at an accelerating pace. The locomotive with all wheels locked by the brakes and the driver still at the controls was dragged into the shaft by the wagons and came to rest wedged in a vertical position with the smokebox uppermost 127 ft. down the shaft. The total length of the train was 283 ft. and there were indications on the rails that the brakes had been applied when the train was 226 ft. from the crater. This crater was 52 ft. long and 34 ft. wide. The body of the driver was never recovered, owing to the dangerous condition of the ground surrounding the cavity." p.181.

If property, especially housing and places of work are 'located' in an earthquake - seismic hazard zone then there must be laws and regulations that define and assure a level of resilience in the construction and / or time to evacuate.

If people are living in high-rise accommodation then there must be governance, law, standards and tests to check the safety, strength, flame resistance of materials used in construction and fabrication.

Environment, Social, Governance [ESG]

As Greeta Thunberg arrives in New York for the:

CLIMATE ACTION SUMMIT, 23 SEPTEMBER 2019

... it is interesting to consider not just where 'health' sits within business and commerce, but the themes and issues that it has reached. Now, we are more aware of the dependencies, for example air quality, physical and mental health, but we are still to finish the chapter titled: "The Damage Done".

'Capitalism' remains rapacious in terms of resource use (ironically if the market and prices are cyclical) and we must acknowledge all of economics, from stock exchanges, to cities, to villages in developing countries, but the challenge remains to transform the geometry of our economics to that of a sustainable circle. As per the climate debate, in some instances, we might close certain industries and leave some classes of minerals, elements, fossil fuels in the ground. We should accept that while some economies are more circular than others, sometimes you cannot circle a square?

Below is an investment hierarchy in which I have highlighted health. Education, literacy and environmental awareness are, if not issues (which they are, especially their respective economics) they are much needed individual actions to achieve progress.

The media notes that next month's summit will include 'world leaders'. I wonder how many business leaders will be present? This would be an indicator of corporate social responsibility, looking very positive in the annual report (even if the self-regulation has not yet achieved homeostatis). If you can advise with figures, or if I find the information later next month I will post here.

Personal note: In posting this, of course, I do not wish to trivialise the enormity of what has happened, the point is that even in disasters - across the world, tools are needed to reflect, think critically, to support learning in order to ultimately assure a safer future for all...

"... They tell us that temperatures are still unbearable, that it’s consistently scorching hot. And it’s getting worse as the weather heats up. Workers are fainting every day. To cope, they use a traditional technique called “coining”, where they scratch their skin with coins to bring blood to the surface of the skin. It’s meant to relieve the stress and fatigue caused by the heat. ..."

A Kin Tai factory worker getting “coined” by a coworker on Monday.

When people are exploited and in the absence of health services and evidence-based health care information, they may resort to traditional remedies to try to solve acute health problems. When the control of the work environment is also beyond the worker's control then acute problems and risks to health are bound to follow.
