Just as I write about writing, this morning news of a further citation for Hodges' model via ResearchGate:

"The SDGs, aiming to establish sustainable health coverage systems and uniform condition coverage, can improve by utilizing a universal, generic assessment and evaluation strategy with sufficient theoretical breadth and application [7]."

Evaluating the Human Rights Perspective on
Sustainable Development Goals Accessible Health Coverage

Vijay Shankar Yadav, Brijmohan Singh
ABSTRACT

Objective: Human Rights Law (HRL) relates to effects investing, that strives to produce helpful social and environmental losses with financial gains. The businesses and organizational managers are exploring innovative economic resources and strategies to increase awareness of the global investment markets' ability to support Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Health coverage is essential for prospective human development due to that provides either an inherent human right or a necessary source of societal, economic progress. Widening income disparities, food insecurity, climate change, global financial crises, corruption and mismanagement of public funds, violent conflicts, rising unemployment, and various other difficulties point to a collective failure to achieve the right to development.

Method: Hence, HRL-SDGs has been designed for health coverage, including financial risk protection, access to excellent necessary healthcare services, and essential drugs and immunizations that are safe, effective, high quality, and cost-efficient. SDGs are established to be progress that satisfies their demands of the people with jeopardizing future generations'potential to achieve the identical.

Result: SDGs are promoted is a strategy for better satisfying the demands of society, the environment, and the economy. The process is performed through gradually integrating and realizing core human rights and essential economic responsibilities. Human rights and sustainable development improvement humans are interrelated and positively reinforcing ideas.

Conclusion: Human rights-based processes aim to help analyze discriminatory behaviors and imbalanced allocations of strength that establish results in development limitations.

SDG paper published: "Hodges’ model: the Sustainable Development Goals and public health – universal health coverage demands a universal framework"

It has taken an age ... 2017, an invitation to write about Hodges' model, then COVID, transfer from one journal to another, a new invaluable co-author in Dr Katharina Wirnitzer without whom this paper would not have been completed. Many, many thanks are in order!

Dr Wirnitzer also provided the theme of nutrition helping to unify the discussion on the SDGs mapped to Hodges' model.

Dr Wirnitzer's work, projects and colleagues include:

The reference has been added to the blog's bibliography in the sidebar.

I am hoping for news soon on another paper concerned with psychosis, early intervention, psychosocial intervention, research methods and h2cm.

ii The Jubilee Centre Framework for Character Education in Schools - 3rd edition

Some thoughts on the previous post ...

Regards, "Character is fundamental: it is the basis for human and societal flourishing;" and "Character is sought freely to pursue a better life;" p.7.

While education is rivalrous - character education is - should be non-rivalrous?

Philosophers have and continue to debate the meaning of 'success', 'good', and related concepts. At a time when students will be acutely aware of the socio-economic transformations needed to accept environmental limits and re-shape the global economy; the provision of tools for reflection, critical thinking, problem solving and 'Being well' should not be a constraint.

There is - must be - a place for a tool that invites, facilitates and rewards conceptual exploration, vocabulary development and the personal and social development that can follow.

Caught, Taught and Sought - are memes still a 'thing'?

Hodges' model clearly has a hold here.

Perhaps, you can embrace it too?

It is encouraging to see how character education draws in PSHE, Citizenship, general studies and more. We should not just acknowledge the role of the humanities in a well-rounded education, but as we turn-the-stones let's be aware of the corners too.

Here in the UK students study for O-Levels, A-Levels, T-Levels, BTEC and more. The government's policy to level up - demands that in education we run the gamut of the alphabet and much more.

Given the global scope of education (usually*), with Hodges' model a product of Manchester Polytechnic now Manchester Metropolitan University, there are strong links between the healthcare sector, education and research - hence the sciences. The question now concerns the nature of these links. I feel they are bound to be strengthened. Even within healthcare, medicine, nursing and the allied health professions - on-the-ground it appears there is a need to do more to effect positive change through the sustainable development goals and not just draw attention to the social determinants of health, but to determine how we can act on them.

Lockdown ii :: Writing, Reading, Drupal...

As we start Lockdown 2 in the UK - England, plus the long nights to follow it's an opportunity to weigh up plans, projects and progress here.

I've nearly finished my review and posts on "The Power of the 2x2 Matrix":

Q. What is Hodges' model? A. It is NOT a 2x2 matrix

Next up - to read and review-  are two books:

Leave No One Behind: Time for Specifics on the Sustainable Development Goals, Homi Kharas, John W. McArthur and Izumi Ohno, Brookings Institution Press.
Leave No One Behind

Last weekend on behalf of my co-author I (re-)submitted a paper on public health, Hodges' model and the sustainable development goals SDGs.

It does pain me that the publisher kindly sent a review copy in the spring, but sadly it's not in the reference list. That subtitle is tantalizing. I will get to this after picking up "After Ethnos":

After Ethnos

To be clear, I'm a nurse not* an ethnographer or anthropologist, but this research approach featured large in studies at Lancaster University 2014-2016.

A further rationale for reading this book is to maintain insight into research methods and methodologies.

Returning to the writing front, just before I found a co-author for the SDG draft, I'd worked on the two-part Threshold Concepts draft dealing with Deprivation of Liberty (now, Liberty Protection Safeguarding) c/o feedback from Mark Bird.

This is next up, especially hoping that the Threshold Concepts can proceed next July at UCL, London.

The other paper is a 'legacy' item which started in 2013 (yes, I know!). Mentioned here on W2tQ no doubt on diagrams, case formulations and h2cm. There is a paper here, he says? It is quite advanced in terms of words and references.

In addition to the legacy issues:
  • person-centred care;
  • integrated care;
  • holistic care;

the standout personal legacy - is this blog and the lack of a website. Soon I'll put twitter down and blog less to try (again) to focus on Drupal and related tools.

*I would like to think that successful nursing interventions (that really 'make a difference') calls for an  ethnographic and anthropological orientation.

Post enigma 2008 ADLS

I've found back in 2008 there is reference to a non-existent post. I'm not sure what happened, but do remember considering this:

https://hodges-model.blogspot.com/2008/09/holistic-care-what-is-holistic.html

Creature of habit and habitat that I am, I also appear to have used the same 'strategy' of mapping concepts to the domains of Hodges' model.

In this case the focus was activities of (daily) living. It is this strategy that is employed in a draft paper still to be revised but on the Sustainable Development Goals. This exercise is not just reflective, there is a reflexive quality to it. The fact that asymmetry is revealed should not be surprising. In this post the clue is in the word 'activities' and ADLs and what is often deemed primary in theory, practice and common-sense.

To be revised ...

Books, Papers and Conferences ...

At present I'm reviewing a paper for a journal on an education topic - nearly complete.

Communication Skills
for Effective Dementia Care

I'm five chapters into the ten chapter book -

Communication Skills for Effective Dementia Care

A Practical Guide to Communication and Interaction Training (CAIT)

- this is for a journal so it will be a 'review'.

800 words, or thereabouts are needed on Hodges' model and its utility in reflecting, deliberating and comprehending the environment and climate change. I have some notes already.

Mathematics and Art: A Cultural History

Yesterday I had to visit a neighbour. A card for an undelivered item: a parcel.

What could this be?

It was quite a big box. 576 pages worth to be exact and a larger format book 9.5 x 12 in that instantly shouted 'quality'.

The book is not new, but is lovely to discover ...

In my message to the publisher I highlighted my non-mathematical status, but great interest in topics within mathematics and the disciplinary bridges from maths - physics; sciences and humanities and of course mathematics and art.

I'm really grateful (especially to Princeton University Press) to receive both these books.

The dementia care title will also help me complete the two-part paper on Hodges' model, deprivation of liberty and threshold concepts. There are so many strategies and techniques outlined for carers both formal and informal. In July reading this book will also assist with a presentation at the Threshold Concepts conference.

Now well into the new year - the revisions to the paper on the SDGs and Hodges' model is also a priority.

To manage time I've put twitter down, but clearly with the above some tweets will follow in due course.

Then finally it will also be time to leave this blog alone for a time - well fewer posts at least ...

Environment, Social, Governance [ESG]

As Greeta Thunberg arrives in New York for the:

CLIMATE ACTION SUMMIT, 23 SEPTEMBER 2019

... it is interesting to consider not just where 'health' sits within business and commerce, but the themes and issues that it has reached. Now, we are more aware of the dependencies, for example air quality, physical and mental health, but we are still to finish the chapter titled: "The Damage Done".

'Capitalism' remains rapacious in terms of resource use (ironically if the market and prices are cyclical) and we must acknowledge all of economics, from stock exchanges, to cities, to villages in developing countries, but the challenge remains to transform the geometry of our economics to that of a sustainable circle. As per the climate debate, in some instances, we might close certain industries and leave some classes of minerals, elements, fossil fuels in the ground. We should accept that while some economies are more circular than others, sometimes you cannot circle a square?

Below is an investment hierarchy in which I have highlighted health. Education, literacy and environmental awareness are, if not issues (which they are, especially their respective economics) they are much needed individual actions to achieve progress.

The media notes that next month's summit will include 'world leaders'. I wonder how many business leaders will be present? This would be an indicator of corporate social responsibility, looking very positive in the annual report (even if the self-regulation has not yet achieved homeostatis). If you can advise with figures, or if I find the information later next month I will post here.

WHO Housing and health guidelines

"Recommendations to promote healthy housing for a sustainable and equitable future"

The quality of housing has major implications for people’s health. Housing in cities is of particular concern, with the world’s urban population predicted to double by 2050 and, with it, the demand for housing. In both developed and developing countries, improving housing conditions and reducing health risks in the home is thus critically important.

Improved housing conditions can save lives, reduce disease, increase quality of life, reduce poverty, help mitigate climate change and contribute to the achievement of a number of Sustainable Development Goals, including those addressing health (SDG 3) and sustainable cities (SDG 11). Housing is therefore a major entry point for intersectoral public health programmes and primary prevention. [Foreward, p.xii]

2nd Planetary Health Annual Meeting in Edinburgh

Since learning about the 2nd Planetary Health Annual Meeting in Edinburgh late last year, I realise I didn't post the news, which is a gift in terms of the purposes of Hodges' model. So, this post celebrates what is a vital subject and call for action and an invite to present a poster. Unfortunately regards the poster, in my haste I did not check the registration terms and the applicable early bird fee of £250 is too much for me personally. If you are a student, or resident citizen of a low and middle income countries opportunity knocks with a welcome reduced early bird registration fee until 9 March.

The planet and planetary health have featured here on W2tQ, on the now defunct website 1998-2015 and in papers, notably:

Jones, P. (2008) Exploring Serres’ Atlas, Hodges’ Knowledge Domains and the Fusion of Informatics and Cultural Horizons, IN Kidd, T., Chen, I. (Eds.) Social Information Technology Connecting Society and Cultural Issues, Idea Group Publishing, Inc. Chap. 7, pp. 96-109.

Another short paper is under review on Hodges' model and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Amid the embarrassment of having to turn the offer down I will follow developments with keen interest and hope that another opportunity may arise.

Book: The Great Convergence ( ...within Hodges' model)

"His [Baldwin's] framework posits three "cascading constraints" that hold back the globalisation of markets, namely the cost of moving goods, ideas and people. Initially, all were bundled together: early societies stayed where they were, passed down information to the next generation and ate what they grew. The first wave of globalisation that created the Great Divergence expanded markets via the falling cost of transporting physical goods, thanks to the steamship and the railway. ..." p.10.

Data visualisation: Contributions to evidence-based decision-making

A SciDev.Net Learning Report

"Data visualisation – the visual representation of data in charts and graphs – has grown in popularity in recent years. Media outlets and research communication organisations alike have invested in the production of data visualisation, committing to the belief that visualisation is an effective form of communication.

In this report, Chapter 1 contextualises the rise of data visualisation and its purported potential to stimulate a 'data revolution' in development. The specific contributions of data visualisation to research communication goals are discussed in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 explores instances in which data visualisation is an appropriate form of research communication, recognising that it is not a ‘magic bullet’ solution to the need for more evidence informed decision-making, but should instead be used selectively. Chapter 4 discusses ways to enhance the effectiveness of data visualisation. Lastly, Chapter 5, provides concluding remarks and highlights areas in which further research and discussion are required so data visualisations can be used to the greatest effect in the research communication sector.

While a number of claims have been made around the potential of data visualisation as a communication tool, there has been a relative lack of informed discussion around the role that data visualisation can play in the research communication sector.

This report builds on our experiences of producing data visualisations and in data journalism more broadly, and brings together the lessons we have learned with insights from the broader sector of research communication. What follows will help researchers, research communication managers and journalists to make more informed decisions about when to invest in data visualisations in order to meet research communication goals."
