Herbert Spencer: The Sociology domain

"In man we see the highest manifestation of this tendency. By virtue of his complexity of structure, he is furthest removed from the inorganic world in which there is least individuality. Again, his intelligence and adaptability commonly enable him to maintain life to old age - to complete the cycle of his existence; that is, to fill out the limits of his individuality to the full. Again, he is self-conscious; that is, he recognizes his own individuality." p.238.

"Spencer's key concept was 'evolution', by which he meant the process of increasing differentiation (that is to say specialization of functions) and integration (by which he meant mutual interdependence of the structurally differentiated parts and co-ordination of their functions.)" p.8.

"Here we see longitudinal and transverse integration going on simultaneously; ..." p.66.

"Having invented the word sociology, Comte is often treated as the founder of the study itself, although his contribution to empirical knowledge is meagre, and cannot be even remotely equated with that of Montesquieu or John Millar. His excellence lies in methodology in which field he laid the foundations for the systematic (or scientific, if you like) study of society." p.15.

"There is no sudden leap from the house-hold type to the factory-type, but a gradual transition. The first step is shown us in the rules of trade-guilds under which, to the members of the family, might be added an apprentice (possibly at first a relation), who, as Brentano says, 'became a member of the family of his master, who instructed him in his trade, and who, like a father, had to watch over his morals, as well as his work'; practically, an adopted son. ... With  development of this modified household-group, the master grew into a seller of goods made, not by his own family only, but by others; and, as his business enlarged, necessarily ceased to be a worker, and became wholly a distributor - a channel through which went out the products, not as a few sons, but of many unrelated artisans." pp.135-136.

On May 20th 2021 14:00-17:20 CEST a Webinar on Public Health and Responsible Innovation in a post-Covid Europe is organized by De Montfort University and “la Caixa” Foundation

As Covid-19 will remain a part of our lives for the next years, the role of public and preventative health has been rarely so important. Digital tools and technologies offer great opportunities to the healthcare sector. However, the challenges and risks in this aspect have to be considered critically.

This webinar will focus on:

  • the challenges and dilemmas for Responsible Innovation in the public health sector;
  • bringing together community and commercial perspectives; and
  • helping to chart a responsible and sustainable way forward for innovation in public health.

Join this forward thinking event and:

  • Learn about recent developments for Responsible Innovation and how these fit with goals for CSR, ESG, circularity, the UN SDGs and European policy agendas;
  • Engage, through your questions, in the dialogue between leading experts; and
  • Help your organisation when designing and developing health-related products, providing or procuring technologies and services in a responsible and sustainable way.

government funding

BBC Radio 4: 5 December 2019 [ from 20 mins...]
"After a long campaign from #FreePeriods, the Government agreed to fund a scheme to ensure all primary and secondary schools and colleges provided free period products to menstruating pupils. This was meant to start rolling out in September 2019 but has now been pushed back to January 2020. It is an opt-in scheme and so schools and colleges must sign up to receive free sanitary products. Gemma Abbott is a campaigner for FreePeriods and volunteer from the charity The Red Box Project, and Nadia Collier is a family support worker at a primary school in London, who has first-hand experience of how important these free period products can be."

Promoting Menstrual Wellbeing

Publication Code : 007 856
"Menstruation is both a physiological and psychological milestone in a woman’s life. This publication has been developed to help nurses break down the stigma that can be associated with what is a completely natural process. It is important to use appropriate and flexible communication methods to ensure information on the menstrual cycle is delivered in an accessible format for women. This publication has a supporting promotional flyer (007 857) and both resources are supported by Hologic’s Wear White Again campaign."

"In passing the "Hamon Law," as it's known, in 2014, France became the first country in the world to open the door to sanctions for the widespread manufacturing practice of "planned obsolescence" - creating products pre-designed for failure at some point so that consumers will be enticed to replace them.
Specifically, the legislation outlaws "the use of techniques whereby the person responsible for placing a product on the market deliberately aims to reduce its lifetime in order to increase the replacement rate." David Schrieberg

Book: The Great Convergence ( ...within Hodges' model)

"His [Baldwin's] framework posits three "cascading constraints" that hold back the globalisation of markets, namely the cost of moving goods, ideas and people. Initially, all were bundled together: early societies stayed where they were, passed down information to the next generation and ate what they grew. The first wave of globalisation that created the Great Divergence expanded markets via the falling cost of transporting physical goods, thanks to the steamship and the railway. ..." p.10.

KT EQUAL event 'Design ahead: design for an ageing population'

Dear KT EQUAL Supporters,

We are pleased to announce the latest KT EQUAL event entitled 'Design ahead: design for an ageing population' to be held on Friday 2nd March 2012 at the Innovation Centre, Bath.

We have an ageing population, but a reducing health and social care budget. Increasingly individuals will be expected to self-purchase products and services that will allow them to live independently. This will provide a large ‘silver’ consumer market for products that are designed and priced appropriately. Although there is some awareness amongst industry of this market opportunity, there is significant scope for more inclusive design of mainstream products that enhance independent livening or support specific living tasks and activities.

In collaboration with KT EQUAL, ALAN (Assisted Living Action Network) will jointly host this event to raise awareness of the scale of the market opportunity; explore the needs of this population; how they are translated into design requirements to drive product innovation; and what kinds of design tools and approaches can support design for an aging population. The event will bring together commercial partners, users and academics.

Please find a provisional programme for 2nd March ...

In addition to the conference, there will be an evening three course dinner and networking reception on Thursday 1st March. Both events will be held at the Innovation Centre in Bath.

To register for the conference and / or dinner, please visit:

...

£80 conference and dinner
£50 conference only

There are limited spaces for the networking dinner, so please register quickly.
