"In 2012, the NHS is threatened, its future uncertain. ... Hepworth was a Labour voter - of course she was. In these drawings, she reveals her egalitarian values. Work is goodness: she sees her own work as a sculptor reflected in the steady eye and hand of the surgeon. In one drawing he even seems to wield a hammer and chisel. But this is not mere artistic self-consciousness. The work being done in these pictures saves lives; Hepworth believes her art, too, can heal souls." p.18.

Hammers and chisels are found in operating theatres and wielded by female surgeons too. The exhibition long finished, I can't believe* that I have held onto to this page from The Guardian for almost six years. I must visit Wakefield.

Chartered Accountant: The value of caring workers

Social care jobs, ... are defined by economists everywhere as low-skilled, or unskilled. For a chartered accountant taking part in a discussion on automation recently, this prompted an existential wobble: "It's easier to automate me than a carer or a cleaner," he said. "So am I really more skilled?"

The Health Career - Life Chances - Model as Critical Social Theory...?

"... the concept of knowledge that is central to critical social theory takes in all possible forms of knowledge, from implicit knowledge (tacit knowledge, know-how, etc.) to the knowledge that we find methodically sharpened and theoretically developed within science. As a conceptual tool of critical analysis applied to contemporary society, such a notion of knowledge makes it possible to study the way that interrelations between the various forms of knowledge are shaped by the relationships between knowledge carriers and between the social groups that they form (what Znaniecki has dubbed "social circles"). Interpreted as a form of cultural capital, knowledge comes to be seen as a factor in power relations, as a potent force driving social development, and as a fundamental determinant of life chances." p.44.

Threshold Concepts Special Edition - Int. Journal of Practice-Based Learning in Health and Social Care

Dear Members

We thought you would want to know about the Threshold Concepts Special Edition Journal which has just been published in the International Journal of Practice-Based Learning in Health and Social Care.

The Journal is free-to-read. The articles explore:
  • Ways in which threshold concepts can inform understanding about how students become practitioners in their chosen profession.
  • Thresholds associated with practice placements and practice-based learning.
  • Ways in which the threshold concepts framework may inform development of curricula in healthcare disciplines.

Please share the link with anyone else who may be interested.

Best wishes

Nursing ...
and its many dimensions ...

"How do you prove that you own a work of conceptual art? This is an interesting issue in today’s art market, with the trend towards the dematerialisation of art, and the primacy of the idea over its physical presence."

"For example, the late US artist Félix González-Torres’s works include “Candy Spills”, in which wrapped sweets are piled on the floor or in a corner, to be taken and eaten by viewers. When the pile has gone, the owner of the work replenishes it. So what stops anyone making and selling their own “Candy Spill”?"

"The answer is the certificate of authenticity issued by the artist or their estate. This scrap of paper is, in fact, the only proof that the work of art genuinely belongs to you, and this is actually what you buy and sell."
