Call for Participants: Survey on Trauma-Informed Archival Practice

My name is Emily Hill, I am a current master's student at the University of Glasgow completing my dissertation titled: 

 

To what extent is Trauma-Informed Archival Practice understood and used within the Archival Sector? How effective are the methods of support available to Archivists? 

The aim of this dissertation is to explore the breadth of knowledge within the Archival sector surrounding Trauma-Informed Archival Practice, where professionals have learned about Trauma theory and if the mental health and secondary trauma support available is accessible and effective. There is no prior knowledge of Trauma-Informed Practice needed to participate, as these concepts are explained within the Participant information forms. 

Participation in this survey will take approximately 15 minutes, including the Participant Information and Agreement forms which should be viewed and signed before participation in the survey questions. 

All survey responses are received anonymised, with the data being analysed in correlation with other respondent data on a question-by-question basis.

Capital -ism in Hodges' model

The New Nature of Business

'In The New Nature of Business, Luc's son André, now vice-chair of Roche, and co-author Peter Vanham lay out how to bring these parallel tracks together. "The business of business isn't just m of business," they write. "The business of business is to at least preserve and where possible expand the world's human, social, environmental and financial capital." 

 The book makes the familiar case that maximising short-term profit leads to long-term destruction of value. But it also suggests that a "narrow focus on [reducing] carbon emissions" could have dangerous unintended consequences. Those four "capitals" depend on one another, write Hoffmann and Vanham. They call for nothing less than a systemic change to a "sustainable, inclusive form of capitalism, with new principles, and new practices".

The most interesting parts of the book describe Hoffmann's path to the realisation in the early 2000s that the profit- making power of business should be harnessed in the quest for sustainability.' (My emphasis with some re-formatting.)

Hodges' model: A tool for Curation

CURATION

"Curation helps solve the problems of today and tomorrow. It's the mass sourcing of the expertise needed to navigate and comprehend the saturated, complex markets* of the twenty-first century." p.166.

Bhaskar also lists (and briefly introduces) the principles of curation:

• Saving time
• Freeing cognitive resources
• Sparing us anxiety
• Maximising utility
• Cutting down complexity
• Finding quality
• Overcoming information overload
• Creating contrast 
• Redefining creativity
• Channeling attention
• Providing context
• Beating overproduction (pp.167-168).

*To markets above, I would add disciplines and professions.

By definition an aide-mémoire should save us time. 

The structure of Hodges' model provides a conceptual scaffold, a substrate affording us cognitive economy.

Through selection (self guided discovery) we are assuring data, information gathering, properly supervised this should spare us anxiety.

We are trying to ensure the effective use of our time, and efficiently zero-in on the concepts that are salient.

By reducing complexity, we increase the relevance and value of what is noted, recorded, acted upon. Data, facts, observations that are not redundant can be dismissed.

Contrast is co-confirmed by using innate oppositions, polarities and dichotomies with attention on the other and the middle.

When needed, Hodges' model can explode subject headings, concepts assisting exploration and creativity, potentially assisting at a transdisciplinary level.

Context rationalisation by testing and filtering a situation, helps to focus attention.

Duplication and repetition do not foster sustainable services, but there should always be scope for verification and person-centredness.

Curation of posts on W2tQ

     Curation: Quote(s) to follow?

Several years ago I reviewed the blog's posts starting from post #1 in April 2006. Some posts, such as, journal calls for papers, conference announcements ... were clearly of time-limited value, even as to the degree they may document the history of ideas. The exercise also highlighted my adopted role of curator, which had not occurred to me before. 

Previously, tentatively, I tried to weigh the value of content. The value to scholarship of Hodges' model, and not wishing to sound grandiose - nursing theory (someone should - given the vacuum over the past 20-30 years?). There are person-centred items, with some that make me cringe (the personal ones, the ones premature and not quite 'fully-formed'), while others stand the test of time (I think). 

Eighteen years is not long and yet the change in several dynamic histories is very obvious, across society, politics, ecosystems, policy, education, nursing and of course technology. Many posts were deleted, others with:

• too many links (for which you can be penalised?)
• broken links;
• missing images / videos;
• typos ...

- where updated accordingly.

Revision #2 beckons in the near future, an effort to rationalise the wheat from the chaff.

It is - same old, same old regards the elephant in the room: that is, the missing new 'platform' - as it keeps reminding me.

With people living longer all over the world, ageing has been framed as a socio-economic problem. In Brazil, older people are expected to remain healthy and autonomous while actively participating in society. Based on ethnographic research in São Paulo, Ageing with Smartphones in Urban Brazil shows how older people in a middle-class neighbourhood conciliate these expectations with the freedom and pleasures reserved for the Third Age. Work is what bonds this community together, providing a sense of dignity and citizenship.

Smartphones have become of great importance to the residents as they search for and engage in new forms of work and hobbies. Connected by a digital network, they work as content curators, sharing activities that fill their schedule. Managing multiple WhatsApp groups is a job in itself, as well as a source of solidarity and hope. Friendship groups help each to download new apps, search for medical information and guidance, and navigate the city. Together, they are reinventing themselves as volunteers, entrepreneurs and influencers, or they are finding a new interest that gives their later life a purpose. The smartphone, which enables the residents to share and discuss their busy lives, is also helping them, and us, to rethink the very representation of ageing.

'Lifelong learner' should apply across all the domains of the model, but it is primarily about intrinsic motivation, a personal and voluntary initiative.

There is no 'evidence-based' explanation for the above, other than praxis. It has arisen over time,  associated with the care domains of Hodges' model. The situation is similar for the 4Ps in the model (italicised).

I hope everyone is doing well.

Thank you to everyone who has filled out my survey so far, the response has been fantastic. This is just a reminder that the closing date for the survey below is 3rd of August 2020.

As part of my Masters, I am writing a dissertation on the challenges faced by record-keepers in the digital age and how Artificial intelligence might be used to rectify these challenges.  I am currently conducting a survey to collect as many perspectives and opinions as possible from professionals working within the sector, where the data collected will form the basis of my dissertation research.

Health & Social Care - Safe Record Keeping Project

BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT and the Department of Health Informatics Directorate (DHID) have launched a project to develop clear and easy to follow guidance for patients and the public on the subject of health and social care records.

The project will provide patients with advice on how to look after the health and social care records and other sensitive personal data that they are creating or health and social care providers are sharing with them. BCS is inviting individuals or organisations to tender for the contract to carry out this work.
