Call for Papers: Compassionate Futures for Collective Well-Being

Despite an academic affiliation, without any (part-time) tutoring hours this past year, it may be difficult to avoid article processing fees (APCs). A shame as I believe that Hodges' model can address this call (below) in a somewhat novel manner. 

If anyone is interested in exploring a writing project framed around Hodges' model and employing a relational - diagrammatic approach please let me know.

The exercise would be greatly enhanced by:

1. Engaging with one of more academics, adept in formal methods (maths, logic..?) and keen to apply their talents within the social sciences - humanities.
2. And, exploring the possibility of working with early career researchers, including from developing nations, independent and 'late career'(!) scholars would also be very welcome.

Social Inclusion, peer-reviewed journal indexed in the Social Sciences Citation Index (Web of Science; Impact Factor: 1.4) and Scopus (CiteScore: 3.5), welcomes new and exciting research papers for its upcoming issue "Compassionate Futures for Collective Well-Being," edited by Karin Hannes (KU Leuven) and Natalia Martini (KU Leuven).

In an increasingly unequal world, the concept of “compassionate futures” offers a new paradigm to address the pressing challenges of social inclusion. Compassionate futures recognize vulnerability, interdependency, and mutual responsibility as fundamental features of social relations, and emphasize care and empathy as fundamental principles in designing socio-cultural, economic, and political systems where the collective well-being of diverse actors, human and other-than-human, can flourish.

We encourage contributions that engage in an interdisciplinary dialogue among scholars, practitioners, and policymakers about what it means to create a caring society in the face of persistent inequalities. In addition, we welcome papers that demonstrate where and how humans take up the responsibility to conceptualize compassionate futures from a multi-species perspective, as well as those that focus on what hinders or supports the idea and the project of compassionate futures. We accept theoretical papers presenting frameworks on compassionate futures, prospective policy analyses, cases featuring the use of futures studies and co-creative approaches that promote compassion and care as central principles in re-imagining the future, and reflection papers focusing on global cooperation for fostering compassionate futures. Authors should connect to the general idea of how humans could or should relate to other agents with whom they share the planet or illustrate how the new narratives they developed support collective well-being.

About this event

As we emerge from the Covid pandemic, it is abundantly clear that we, the human race, share the same ecological systems and have the same survival instincts. However, we treat things in a piecemeal fashion in our day-to-day existence and conveniently forget that all our lives are entwined. We, the human race generating waste and creating pollution, cannot blame anyone else. Never has thought in a joined-up way been more critical. It is appropriate this year that the conference is hosted at the University of Lancaster that, under Peter Checkland, has done so much to stimulate Systems Thinking and Practice. To this end, the conference committee agreed that the theme should focus upon the value of systems thinking and practice and encourage contributions from across the spectrum of human concerns where the notion of holism is at its core.

Be healthful and careful ...

In the series of posts about the book:

Review: i Fundamentals of Person-Centred Healthcare Practice 

- the word/concept of 'healthful' stood out (Introduction, chapter 4 pp.33-40). Revisiting this I noticed there aren't any entries in the index, or I've missed them. 

Healthful stands out in the context of Hodges' model with:

• disease
• strength
• disability
• ability
• ... [blog's tag list]

- and thinking about care, careful, carefulness. 

 

As included in the posts, chapter 17 concerns the socio-political context in person-centred practice. The index is very good, comprehensive but the social determinants of health or the sustainable development goals are not discussed even in a cursory manner. This is why I believe the 'political' is a default care domain.

 

 

Another book (I bought) by The Care Coalition 'The Care Manifesto' in their introduction and having just begun to read, central to their argument is the fact that at present (nationally and internationally) carelessness reigns. They write:

"What, we now ask, would 

happen if we were to begin 

instead to put care at the 

very centre of life?" p.5

Yes, what would happen?

The WEF Nexus: Water - Energy - Food

“Due to the flexibility of the nexus concept, its application in empirical studies has best served to expand, rather than direct, study scope. Insights tend to be high-level, while identified actionable management and policy proscriptions are not broadly applicable. We found no clear methodology uniting nexus studies, and a lack of improvement of resource management and governance outcomes.” p.5.

"The great breadth of the WEF nexus provides an intellectual home for an expansive array of research objectives, methods, and conclusions. This has produced some valuable scholarship but simultaneously limits overall insights and lessons that can be drawn from empirical nexus work. Our review identified some high-level insights and commonalities related to the definition of the WEF nexus (centring on linkages between WEF systems), the motivations for empirical nexus study, the importance of economics and governance in the nexus and nexus analyses, and the role of social and physical factors in constructing nexus interdependencies. Beyond these, however, the findings and specific technical and policy solutions proposed in the reviewed studies are difficult to synthesize as they lack coherence." p.14.
