Title: 
Current topics in AI in medicine and health informatics: 
current challenges and a look ahead

Abstract: In this talk I will review current challenges, current work by the biomedical informatics community, and future topics related to AI. I draw the information from a paper[1] that a group of informatics editors and other respected members of the community co-authored and published in 2023 in the Journal of Healthcare Informatics Research. There, we identified focus areas that should be addressed in the next ten years, specifically learning from new challenges that emerged in the Covid-19 epidemic. I will also present my analysis of current and emerging topics of papers published in the Journal of Biomedical Informatics (JBI) in the past two years, and current calls for special issue papers. I will also touch upon the role of international collaboration in emerging research areas (in JBI).

Short Bio: Mor Peleg is Full Professor of information systems and Founding Director of the University of Haifa’s Data Science Research Center, former Chair of the Data Science BSc program of the University of Haifa, and former Chair of the Department of Information Systems. She is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Biomedical Informatics, which focuses on novel biomedical informatics methods. Mor's BSc and MSc degrees in biology and her PhD in Information Systems – are from the Technion -- Israel Institute of Technology, and her 4-year postdoc was at Stanford University's Center for Biomedical Informatics Research. Mor’s research focuses on clinical guideline-based decision support systems (CDSS) for patients and physicians. She led the large-scale European project MobiGuide and was a PI in the CAncer PAtients Better Life Experience ( CAPABLE project https://capable-project.eu/). Event January 2022: How VR and other technologies will impact the future of NHS service delivery

Hi all,

Hope you’re keeping well.

I’m working with the South-West AHSN to put on a Future of Care distinguished address in January featuring Health Futurist Dr. Shafi Ahmed talking about how VR and other technologies will impact the future of NHS service delivery; it should get Universities thinking about how our teaching and learning needs to develop.  I’m hoping it will be a really inspiring event for colleagues as well as our students at the University.

It will be an online as well as on campus event, although given the way Omicron is going could well be just online.

The event is planned for Thursday January 20th 2022, 7-8pm.

I wondered if it would be possible to promote this within your organisations for colleagues to sign up to if interested.

'Computers' have not always been a matter of mechanism. Depending on your definition, what we describe as medical informatics, clinical informatics and nursing informatics could be said to originate in the data-gathering, recording and graphic work of John Bell, Florence Nightingale and many other pioneers. If John Bell and Florence Nightingale introduced the arrival of modern public health and nursing respectively, there is still a need to 'fix' the history of medical informatics.

"Pinpointing the beginning of the field of medical informatics is challenging, but it is perhaps best to begin any discussion of the field with the 1959 paper “Reasoning foundations of medical diagnosis; symbolic logic, probability, and value theory aid our understanding of how physicians reason” by Ledley and Lusted [19]. Ledley went on to invent the whole-body CT scanner [20], and Lusted became a leader in the field of medical decision-making. Their 1959 paper, however, laid out a probabilistic model for medical diagnosis, with grounds in set-theory and Bayesian inference." p.642.

Phi and the cruellest cut

"The measure of how a system integrates information is called phi.

One way of calculating phi involves dividing a system into two and calculating how dependent each part is on the other. One cut would be the "cruellest", creating two parts that are the least dependent on each other. If the parts of the cruellest cut are completely independent, then phi is zero, and the system is not conscious." p.10

I've mentioned this paper before on W2tQ. I thought I would upload a copy as the basic details seems to have prompted some interest. At some point I would like to return to this subject:
ABSTRACT

The use of information forms the basis of nursing policies, standards and professional codes of conduct. Although used intuitively, nurses must now also grapple empirically with information needs often defined by others, and with the technology used to capture and process it. Even the briefest contemplation of 'information' reveals a truly pervasive concept. Information is ubiquitous. In order to care effectively in the so-called "information age" health care professionals need to understand information. This paper is a small contribution to that effort, attempting to conjoin the disparate fields of health and the information sciences; and the basic sciences upon which they are based.

This paper explores how definitions of 'information' formulated in computing and communication theory relate to health and other aspects of human experience. The strategy adopted to achieve this is threefold. First, there is the vexed question of defining data, information and knowledge. Second, I consider how communication - that essential nursing activity - relates to information, meaning and the messages people seek to convey to each other. Thirdly, clinical situations are described in an information oriented manner, using the concepts of 'redundancy' and 'entropy'. The conclusion provides an historical perspective.

Paper: Patel et al. (2009) Clinical complexity and medical education

The following item about a paper from last year was posted by Rakesh Biswas on the COMPLEXITY-PRIMARY-CARE list. After Rakesh's comments I have included a quotation.

The paper in question by Patel, et al. will be an important reference for me, even though the definition of domain and discipline remains problematic. (A glossary for the health career model will follow on the new site.)

Suddenly, the passing of time is also clear given that:

As our society progresses in the accumulation of knowledge and as the complexity of this knowledge increases, it becomes more important to determine how to structure education to provide individuals with the most comprehensive base of knowledge without sacrificing either depth and complexity or broadness of material.

Here is a quote from the paper:

Much of the early research in the study of reasoning in domains such as medicine was carried out in laboratory or experimental settings. There has been a shift in more recent years toward examining cognitive issues in naturalistic medical settings, such as medical teams in intensive care units [2], anesthesiologists working in surgery[89], nurses providing emergency telephone triage [90], and reasoning with technology by patients [91] in the health care system. This research was informed by work in the area of dynamic decision-making [92], complex problem-solving [93], human factors [94,95], and cognitive engineering [44]. Naturalistic studies reshaped researchers’ views of human thinking, as expressed in ‘‘situativity” theory’s terms (as described in Section 2.1.4) [23–26], by shifting the onus of cognition from being the unique province of the individual to being distributed across social and technological contexts. p.186.

Whilst as Rakesh points out Dr. Patel's focus is medical cognition, then through the health career model it would appear my interest is nursing cognition. As per the legacy of models of nursing - which did recognize the patient through the concept of patiency (Stevens, 1979) - we realise that now all disciplines must demand much more of their respective models in the 21st century.

Chair of Int. Academic Health Science Centre Designation Panel announced [UK]

Health Minister, Ben Bradshaw, today announced the appointment of Sir Alan Langlands as Chair of the international panel that is being established to designate Academic Health Science Centres (AHSCs) in England. The international panel will make a recommendation to the Secretary of State for Health about the partnerships that should be awarded AHSC status. The panel will offer a form of "peer review" and will identify the organisations best placed to compete internationally alongside leading AHSCs elsewhere in the world, such as Harvard, Johns Hopkins and the Karolinska Institute.

The NHS Next Stage Review announced the government's commitment to fostering AHSCs in England. The intention is to identify and work with a small number of health and academic partners, who have come together to focus on world-class research, teaching and patient care. These Centres will take new discoveries and promote their application in the NHS and across the world.

Health Minister Ben Bradshaw said:

"I am pleased to announce that Sir Alan Langlands will chair the international panel that we are establishing to designate Academic Health Science Centres in England. Sir Alan brings a wealth of expertise to this role. His experience in health policy and in education means that he is ideally placed to assess the strength of applicants' proposals for bringing together research, education and patient care functions to improve health outcomes."

Sir Alan Langlands said:

"I am delighted to be appointed chair of the international panel. Academic Health Science Centres in England have the potential to improve healthcare services in the NHS and internationally. Improved collaboration between healthcare organisations and Universities has the potential to enable the rapid adoption of new research into clinical practice."
