Hodges' Model: Welcome to the QUAD: aggression

Hodges' model is a conceptual framework to support reflection and critical thinking. Situated, the model can help integrate all disciplines (academic and professional). Amid news items, are posts that illustrate the scope and application of the model. A bibliography and A4 template are provided in the sidebar. Welcome to the QUAD ...

Laughter and Medicine Conference

Manon, Laughing Gas, 2019, installation, Kunsthaus Zürich

British Academy/Wellcome Trust Conferences bring together scholars and specialists from around the world to explore themes related to health and wellbeing.

'Connecting knowledge across the disciplines, this conference will put practicing doctors in direct dialogue with researchers in the humanities – especially scholars of literature, cinema and cultural history. Together, they will seek to understand the social, diagnostic, therapeutic and physiological implications of laughter, inside and outside the clinic. Laughter is not always the 'best medicine', nor is it linked only to comedy and enjoyment. 'Healing laughter' differs markedly from pathological laughter, hysterical laughter, forced or bitter laughter, laughter aimed at mitigating awkwardness in unsuccessful communication, laughter intended to deceive, or laughter signifying fear, discomfort or aggression. Irony and other double-coded signifiers that abound in comic and parodic representations of medical practitioners and their patients often reveal medicine’s paradoxical place in various cultural imaginaries and in individual and collective experience.

This conference will study the diverse forms of laughter occurring around medicine in particular eras and cultural environments alongside comparative analysis of patterns and problematics over the long history of Western medicine and its representations.'

Ukraine we see you - RD4U

"The Register of Damage Caused by the Aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine (RD4U) is proud to announce a major milestone in its mission to address the consequences of the war and bring justice and reparations to Ukraine and its people. On 2 April 2024, RD4U will officially open the claims submission process for compensation of damage, loss or injury caused by Russian aggression against Ukraine.

The historic launch will take place in The Hague as part of the Ministerial Conference "Restoring Justice for Ukraine", in the presence of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejčinović Burić, heads of international organisations, ministers and senior officials from more than 60 states, underlining the global support for Ukraine's quest for justice and reparation.

The RD4U Board decided to open the Register for the submission of claims, evidence and related information after confirming that the formal and technical framework is in place. This step follows the approval by the Conference of Participants of RD4U of the rules and regulations of the Register, including the rules for the submission, processing and recording of claims and the list of categories of claims eligible for inclusion in the Register.

“Our decision to start the process of submission of claims is an important first step in this process. Success moving forward will require continued support from all stakeholders. The Register of Damage for Ukraine will continue its work with dedication and resolve to deliver justice to the Ukrainian people in conformity with its mandate”, said the Chair of the Board, Robert Spano.

The initial launch on 2 April will focus on one critical category, namely damage or  destruction of residential property. The destruction of homes in war has an immense impact on people's lives. Between 300,000 and 600,000 claims are expected in this category. The claim form for submission of this category of claims has also been approved." . . .

CLOSE(D) CARE: Group climate in a secure forensic setting for individuals with mild intellectual disability

This morning ResearchGate alerted me to a new paper/thesis citing Hodges' model.

I will add this to the bibliography and post again in the new year, relating selected conceptual content of Elien's thesis to Hodges' model.

Background

CLOSE(D) CARE
CLOSE(D) CARE
This study examines associations between group climate, aggressive incidents and coercive measures in adults with mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning (MID‐BIF) of a secure forensic setting.

Method Participants (N = 248) were interviewed about their perception of group climate utilizing the Group Climate Instrument. Data on aggressive incidents and coercive measures were retrieved from the facilities’ electronic database. A multilevel structural equation model was fitted in which variability in perception of group climate within and between living groups was examined.

Results An open and therapeutic group climate was associated with lower levels of aggression within and between groups. A higher number of aggressive incidents were significantly associated with a higher number of coercive measures.

Conclusions The findings have implications for the understanding of how group climate may play a role in reducing aggressive incidents at the living group in treatment of individuals with MID‐BIF in secure forensic settings.
