'If there is one product that symbolises the absurdities of the EU's single market in goods, it might be a cuddly elephant. The Djungelskog toy from Ikea may only be 12cm tall and cost less than €2, but it has a 20cm-long label protruding from its behind.

Environmental rules from France and EU textile legislation account for much of the length. But the elongated label reflects a strategic even a philosophical, problem for Europe as its companies battle to compete globally.

The single market in goods should be the EU's crowning achievement. Compared with free movement of people, services or capital, it is the area that has come furthest in more than 30 years since the common market was established.

Yet there remain small, often invisible barriers to trade that, taken together, amount to what the IMF estimates is a drag on Europe's economy equivalent to a tariff of 44 per cent.'

Economic historian Joel Mokyr is rewarded with one half of the prize for his description of the mecha­nisms that enable scientific breakthroughs and practical applications to enhance each other and create a self-generating process, leading to sustained economic growth. Because this is a process that challenges prevailing interests, he also demonstrates the importance of a society that is open to new ideas and permits change.' 'The other half of the prize is awarded to the economists Philippe Aghion and Peter Howitt. In a joint publica­tion from 1992, they constructed a mathematical model of how companies invest in improved pro­duction processes and new, better-quality prod­ucts, while the companies that previously had the best products are outcompeted. Growth arises through creative destruction. This process is creative because it builds upon innovation, but it is also destructive because older products become obsolete and lose their commercial value.'

'It is apparent that, in the long run, sustained growth does not only have positive consequences for human wellbeing. First, sustained growth is not synonymous with sustainable growth. Innovations can have significant negative side effects. Mokyr argues that such negative effects sometimes initiate processes that uncover solutions to problems, making technological development a self-correcting pro­cess. Clearly, however, this often requires well-designed policies, such as in the areas of climate change, pollution, antibiotic resistance, increasing inequality and the unsustainable use of natural resources.'

Even the book's cover points to the preoccupation of economics with mechanics (process!?). The view of economies as machines, which this book and the work of the authors and others now seeks to challenge and change.

This week there has been a major focus on Self  Care Week.

Lars Münter brought to my attention the need for an 'Economy of Wellbeing'. 

Jenkins's item in the FT refers to Milton Friedman, shareholders and stakeholders. The latter seems to be an over-used term in healthcare and health services, but there is learning in comparing and contrasting the two.

The climate emergency will change capitalism. 

Perhaps, what we need is not just an:

'Economy of Wellbeing'

as 'Economies of Wellbeing'

The presiding orientation of which must be circular.

The need for a hybrid propagator

In the Northern hemisphere now is the time to be out there planting seeds. Here in the NW of England Spring is just around the corner (the first turn of the year). If you have a greenhouse you can start early. If you have a propagator you can start even sooner and possibly experiment with more exotic flora.

Plants are a known quantity in terms of their needs: temperature, soil, sun, wind, frost, position. ... You just need to add the green fingers to make it work: plus the weather!


It really is magic sowing the sweet peas and seeing the display and smelling the scent in summer.

When it comes to health and social care though we need a special propagator: a true hybrid. Just consider the needs:

physical emotional assessment outcomes quality reflection safety personal social history finance consent intervention person-centered carer demographics information education self-care value for money personalisation dignity respect care collaboration engagement values involvement risk ...
