Is there such a thing as the holistic bandwidth of 'resilience'?

In preparing my presentation for World Conference on Complex Systems 2026 (WCCS26) next month^, I am reading:

Bridging the Macro and the Micro by Considering the Meso: Reflections on the Fractal Nature of Resilience

ABSTRACT. We pursued the following three interconnected points: (1) there are unexplored opportunities for resilience scholars from different disciplines to cross-inspire and inform, (2) a systems perspective may enhance understanding of human resilience in health and social settings, and (3) resilience is often considered to be fractal, i.e., a phenomenon with recognizable or recurring features at a variety of scales. Following a consideration of resilience from a systems perspective, we explain how resilience can, for analytic purposes, be constructed at four scales: micro, meso, macro, and cross-scale. Adding to the cross-scale perspective of the social-ecological field, we have suggested an analytical framework for resilience studies of the health field, which incorporates holism and complexity by embracing an ecological model of cognition, something supported by empirical studies of organizations in crisis situations at various spatial as well as temporal scales.

Since the turn of the millennium, it appears 'resilience' has exploded across the media, and literature. As a result, it has also been viewed negatively by mental health service advocates, and activists as they decry the run-down state of formal services. The 'recovery model', undoubtedly closely associated with personal resilience is not the only answer.

This paper is helpful, in several respects but specifically to illustrate the idea of how Hodges' model can frame holistic bandwidth, across its care / knowledge domains.

Reply to: [HIFA] Self-care could cut need for millions of GP visits (4)

The following is a reply to a thread on HIFA - Healthcare Information For All:

Dear Lucie, Thelma and All,

The Austrian economist Joseph Schumpeter (1883-1950) defined a dynamic economy as that which is in equal parts destructive and constructive (Abbott and Ryan, 2000).

As Lucie points out in the NHS we are set-fast in ill-health delivery, curricula and workforce planning. Breaking this demand-supply is to try to stop a runaway process that has spawned many other processes: specialties, disciplines, treatments...

Policy makers repeatedly place the solution in reducing demand by eliminating - providing cures for diseases and through technology.

Innovation through technology is still sold as a (the) solution (2002.. NPfIT - currently NHS Digital). Technology has a role to play. The benefits however must be Socio-Technical.

We can readily see the connection between Schumpeter's definition and our present preoccupation with innovation and technology driven disruption?

Talk abounds of the healthcare system / market / economy being disrupted (as per HIFA and this thread!).

Innovation is often stimulated through seed funding.

In computing a runaway process may need to be 'Killed'. Clearly and despite the resultant irony, we cannot do this to our respective healthcare systems (whatever their constitution and ideology).

We cannot Kill the NHS, private and 3rd sector systems we have at present and have them newly reconfigured on 31 December 2016, 23:59:60 UTC to be primarily:

HEALTH PROMOTING, PREVENTIVE - Self-caring and with a health literate populous

Even with the addition of a leap second; this would be a leap too far.

Change of our health care systems will need to be 'seeded'.

Many small gains can be compounded, the seeds must be broadcast across the domains of Hodges' model:

  • INTRA- INTERPERSONAL
  • SOCIALLY
  • the SCIENCES
  • POLITICALLY
  • SPIRITUALLY

2nd Workshop: Conceptual Spaces at Work - 25-27 August 2016, Sweden

The workshop focuses on concepts and their applications using the theory of Conceptual Spaces (CS), as introduced by Peter Gärdenfors (2000).


Applications of Conceptual Spaces
It provides a geometric model for the representation of human conceptual knowledge that bridges the symbolic and the sub-conceptual levels of representation. The model has already proven to have a broad range of applicability, not only within cognitive science but also across a number of disciplines related to concepts and representation. 

A sample of this work is collected in Zenker & Gärdenfors (2015), based on papers presented in Conceptual Spaces at Work 2012 at Lund University.

The Bigger Picture - Hockney: Hodges' model 4 dynamic perspectives



In the decades to follow the patient, the carer, the health and social care professional must all be dynamic. All must be capable of movement - that is taking in several perspectives. As always composition is vital. So is choreography. As Hockney indicates the picture comprises both ordinary perspective and reverse perspective.


If static, found only for a moment: an assessment, plan, evaluation. A snapshot. Then moving a-gain.

Ever seeking the dynamic.

The art and science of Serresian spin

To Michel Serres:
- the middle is a point of reflection, a point at which questions - the question - must be asked. In fulfilling the purposes of the health career model:

  • bridging the theory - practice gap;
  • facilitating holistic practice;
  • supporting (personal and group) reflection;
  • enabling curriculum development;
- the model's four domains are constantly (re-)visited in turn. Motion is constant. Conception - birth provides that initial impetus. Health status. Life - momentum. Centered on the person the movement is usually self-correcting, seeking balance. Health care. Questions and answers whether whole or in part follow, leaving a trail of care delivered and care planned. A record.

There is definite synergy between our use of the health career model, the dynamic quality and quantity of health and social care and Serres' description of the spinning top:
"The behaviour of the cone or the top is worth analysing. Throw this toy and describe, as Plato did, what happens. It is in movement, this is certain, yet it is stable. It even rests on its point or its pole, the more so as its movement is rapid. All children know this. But its rest is still more paradoxical. The top may move about, by translation, without ever losing its stability. To repeat, it can do so as long as it turns very quickly.


Even better, its axis may lean, take on an inclination, without putting the movement of the whole in too much danger. It may again rock, by nutation, oscillating around a mean location. This very ancient and quite childish machine is marvellously instructive.

First of all, it combines and the movements known and thinkable at the time: rotation, translation, fall, leaning and swaying. An integral model, additive, overcharged, yet simple. Second, and above all, it conjoins in a simple one-off experiment phenomena judged or presumed to be contradictory. It is in movement and rest, it turns and yet does not move, it rocks and is stable. The simplicity of a complexity, first and foremost, an additive machine; a synthesis of contradictions, beyond anything else. Now it may serve as a little model of the world, for a naive simple and local orrery. It quivers, at rest, it moves forward, turning, like the heavens, like the stars." p.28-29.

To begin - the health career model is concerned with space, structures and knowledge (care domains) built around two axes, plus the 'subjects' and 'activities' of health.

How we define and (so) divide space and accord that space salience amid changing contexts is critical to theory, practice and management and the models we subsequently derive:

... The dichotomy does not cut, it defines, it surrounds the closure of a limit, it delineates a boundary. Within the space thus enclosed like meets like. Or rather, conversely, the specific convergance [convenance] or identity, the assembly of the analogous, delimits zones in the disorder which are distinguished from each other. Call for Papers: Special Issue of Nonlinear Dynamics, Psychology, and Life Sciences on Medical Applications of Nonlinear Dynamics




NDPLS is actively searching for manuscripts for a special issue to be entitled, “Medical Applications of Nonlinear Dynamics.” Potential papers could range from the level of individual patients to that of the health care system, and could include such topics as:

  • Nonlinear patterns in illness
  • Treatment effects and nonlinearity
  • Practice change via nonlinear intervention
  • Neural networks in clinical decision-making
  • Catastrophes in health care utilization
  • Nonlinear advice for health care reform
  • Modeling ambulatory practice
  • Dynamical effects of illness upon the family
  • Nonlinear dynamics within the doctor-patient relationship
Contributions may be theoretical or empirical. Theoretical papers should be firmly grounded in the extant literature and culminate in new principles involving nonlinear dynamics that can be tested; manuscripts heavy on conjecture with little reference to evidence are not encouraged. Reviews of the relevant literature on applications of nonlinear dynamics are also welcome, if they synthesize and interpret this material in novel ways. Empirical papers may include experimental observations, simulations, or analyses of real-world data. Articles will be reviewed by two or more experts in the relevant field.

The purview of the journal is critical to the inclusion of articles: Nonlinear Dynamics, Psychology, and Life Sciences publishes papers that augment the fundamental ways we understand, describe, model, and predict nonlinear phenomena in psychology and the life and social sciences. One or more of the following nonlinear concepts must be an explicit part of the exposition: attractors, bifurcations, chaos, fractals, solitons, catastrophes, self-organizing processes, cellular automata, genetic algorithms and related evolutionary processes, neural networks, agent-based models.

The broad mixture of the disciplines represented here indicates that many bodies of knowledge share common principles. By juxtaposing developments in different fields within the life and social sciences, the scientific communities may obtain fresh perspectives on those common principles and their implications. Because the journal is multidisciplinary in scope, each article should make an original contribution to at least one substantive area and, to the extent possible, illuminate issues beyond that area's boundaries.

NDPLS is a refereed journal and is published quarterly by the Society for Chaos Theory in Psychology & Life Sciences. Additional information for the preparation of articles for submission can be found on the journal’s web site: www.societyforchaostheory.org/ndpls/ .

The project is planned on the following schedule (please see link above for full details):
  • Abstracts are requested prior to submission in order to assist with the organization of the issue contents, and they are welcome any time before the paper submissions deadline.
  • Full-text papers need to arrive by December 31, 2009.
  • Manuscripts should be prepared in APA style. Key style points and small variations that are specific to the journal can be found in the Instructions for Authors on the journal web site. Reviews completed by February 28, or sooner to the extent possible. Revisions and final edits should be received by April 1, 2010.
  • Publication in October, 2010.

Lupina Award in Health System Dynamics

The Health Policy Special Interest Group (HPSIG) of the System Dynamics Society is proud to announce the -

Lupina Young Researchers Award in Health System Dynamics

- which will be presented for the first time at this summer's 2008 International System Dynamics Conference in Athens, Greece. The award is sponsored by the Lupina Foundation of Toronto, Canada, and will be accompanied by a check in the amount of CAN$5000. The award will be presented to the recipient (or recipients) during the HPSIG meeting on the Sunday afternoon meeting just preceding the conference (July 20th this year), and a brief announcement will also be made to all conference attendees at a plenary session.

This award will be given to people at early stages of their careers to encourage them to do further work in health system dynamics. In the event that the winning paper represents the equal work of two young researchers, or if there is a tie among papers, the cash prize may be subdivided. The work considered for this award must be accepted as a paper for presentation at the International System Dynamics Conference. Papers are self-nominated, and to be eligible, the author(s) must either be in graduate school or have completed their educational training no more than five years prior to paper submission.

Authors need not be members of the System Dynamics Society and may, in fact, specialize in other methodologies and use them in their submitted papers. But their work must:

  • Focus on dynamic phenomena in health systems and problems,
  • Demonstrate technical quality and clear presentation, and
  • Provide original insights derived from a dynamic analysis.
The winner(s) must be present at the Sunday HPSIG meeting to receive their prize, and be willing to discuss their winning work at that meeting.
